The Federation Council will consider the law on the denunciation of the Open Skies Treaty on June 2, a source in the parliament also told RIA Novosti.
"The law on the denunciation of the Open Skies Treaty is proposed to be submitted to the house for consideration at a meeting on June 2," the source said.
The Open Skies Treaty was signed in 1992 and became one of the confidence-building measures in Europe after the Cold War, allowing the 34 participating countries to openly collect information about each other's armed forces and activities. In May 2020, the United States launched the procedure for withdrawing from the treaty, which ended on November 22. In response to this decision, the Russian Foreign Ministry on January 15 announced the launch of domestic procedures for withdrawing from the treaty.
Russian President Vladimir Putin submitted a bill on the denunciation of the agreement to the State Duma, which supported the document at the plenary session, after which it was submitted to the Federation Council. The United States on the eve of the summit of the Presidents of the Russian Federation and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden, informed Russia that they will not return to the Open Skies Treaty. The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed disappointment with the US move, saying that Washington missed another chance to contribute to strengthening security in Europe.
