Moscow. May 17. INTERFAX-Ships of the Russian Baltic Fleet will make seven long-distance voyages this year, including to Sudan, where, as reported, a base of the Russian Navy will be established.
"By the end of the year, our ships will have to make seven long - distance trips, three of which are to the far sea zone. Baltic sailors will visit the foreign ports of Tartus (Syria), Limassol (Cyprus), Port Sudan (Sudan), Muscat (Oman)," Commander of the Russian Baltic Fleet Alexander Nosatov said in an interview with the Russian Defense Ministry's newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda.
In December 2020, it became known that Russia and Sudan signed an agreement on the establishment of a logistics point for the Russian Navy on the Red Sea in Sudan. The document was published on the official Internet portal of legal information.
The agreement noted that the maximum number of Russian military personnel in the naval station in Sudan will not exceed 300 people. The document assumes that a maximum of four Russian ships, including ships with a nuclear power plant, can be located at the Russian Navy station in Sudan at the same time. Russia can use the airspace of Sudan.
A commission of the Russian Defense Ministry visited Sudan, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov, who oversees property management and troop cantonment, told Interfax on February 9.
In April, Bloomberg reported that the Sudanese authorities temporarily suspended the agreement with Russia on the establishment of a naval base on the Red Sea. The Russian Embassy in Sudan denied this information.
