The US wants to de-escalate tensions at sea with Iran in order to prevent possible miscalculations in the future. This was announced on April 27 at a briefing by Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby.
He was asked to comment on reports that the boats of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC, elite units of the Armed Forces) Iran was allegedly surrounded by two US Coast Guard ships in the Persian Gulf on April 2.
"We obviously want to see a de-escalation of tensions. We don't want to see miscalculations," a Pentagon official said.
According to Kirby, the IRGC's unsafe and unprofessional activities at sea have been a constant problem for a long time. He added that the Pentagon does not see the same behavior on the part of the Iranian Navy, writes "<url>".
It is noted that the briefing was held before it became known that a US Navy patrol ship fired warning shots on April 27 due to the approach of the IRGC fast boats in the Persian Gulf. According to the US Navy, the crews repeatedly called on the Iranian boats to stop the maneuvers over a loudspeaker. According to the American side, communication was maintained with the Iranian military and measures were taken "to reduce the risk of miscalculation, collision and escalation."
On January 2, US intelligence agencies suggested that Iran had increased the level of combat readiness of part of its naval forces in the Persian Gulf. A CNN source previously reported that Tehran is allegedly " transferring short-range ballistic missiles to Iraq."
Iran's Charge d'affaires to the UN, Eshag al-Habib, on January 1 asked the UN Security Council and the international community to call on the United States to stop its destabilizing actions in the Persian Gulf. He noted the increased "military adventurism of the United States" in the Persian Gulf and in the Arabian Sea.
