Amid the escalation with Russia, Kiev appealed to Berlin to provide weapons to strengthen coastal defense.
As reported by DW, UNIAN writes, this is stated in the article of the German edition Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung (FAS). The journalists received a list of requests from the Ukrainian side.
In particular, Kiev requested warheads for anti-ship missiles of the SeaSpear type, anti-aircraft guns of the GDM-008 Millennium type, unmanned underwater systems SeaCat and SeaFox for detecting and neutralizing sea mines.
It is reported that earlier Ukraine unsuccessfully asked Germany to transfer the decommissioned corvettes. Such priorities, as the publication adds, are explained by the fact that the Black Sea coast is considered as one of the targets of a possible invasion of the Russian Federation.
However, the requests were not granted. According to FAS sources, the German Foreign Minister, Social Democrat Heiko Maas, negatively assessed the idea of providing Ukraine with weapons. At the same time, Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, who belongs to the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), is ready to take such a step.
The idea of arming Ukraine was also supported by the chairman of the Bundestag Committee on Foreign Affairs, CDU member Norbert Röttgen.
