The Russian Aerospace Forces attacked a terrorist training base near Palmyra, as a result, up to 200 militants and about 500 kg of ammunition were destroyed. This was announced on Monday, April 19, by the deputy head of the Russian Center for Reconciliation of the Warring Parties in Syria, Rear Admiral Alexander Karpov.
According to him, the militants created a disguised base northeast of Palmyra, where combat groups were formed to carry out terrorist attacks in various regions of the country, as well as improvised explosive devices were manufactured.
Karpov noted that after the intelligence about the location of the terrorist base was confirmed, the VKS aircraft struck the object.
"As a result... two shelters, up to 200 militants, 24 pick — up trucks with heavy machine guns, as well as about 500 kg of ammunition and components for creating improvised explosive devices were destroyed," the deputy head of the center said.
He added that illegal armed groups are planning terrorist attacks and attacks on state institutions in major cities to destabilize the situation in the country on the eve of the presidential elections in Syria.
The Rear Admiral noted that the training of terrorists is conducted in training camps in the territories not controlled by the Syrian authorities, including in the Al-Tanf zone, which is controlled by the US armed forces.
According to him, over the past day, no attacks from illegal armed groups controlled by Turkey were registered, 33 attacks from the positions of the terrorist group Jabhat al-Nusra (banned in the Russian Federation) were recorded in the Idlib de-escalation zone.
Earlier in April, it became known that the presidential elections in Syria will be held on May 26, the nomination of candidates began on April 19. On March 17, it was reported that Syria will organize presidential elections so that every citizen of the country can vote, including those who remained in the territories not controlled by Damascus, or were forced to leave the SAR.
