Washington, April 14. Twenty-seven Democrats in the U.S. Senate support President Joe Biden's efforts to return to the Iran nuclear deal.
"One of your early urgent national security priorities should be to return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) to address the threat posed by Iran's nuclear program," wrote the Senate Democrats, led by Senators Tim Kaine (R - Virginia) and Chris Murphy (R-Connecticut).
"We strongly support a return to the JCPOA and the use of a compliance-for-compliance approach as a starting point for a reset of US relations with Iran. If Iran is prepared to return to compliance with the restrictions imposed by the JCPOA, the United States should be prepared to join the deal and provide the sanctions relief required under the agreement, " the Democrats wrote.
In May 2018, the United States withdrew from the JCPOA and resumed anti-Iranian sanctions.
A year later, Iran announced a phased reduction of its obligations under the JCPOA. Among such steps was the refusal of Tehran to export excess enriched uranium.
