MOSCOW, April 5. /TASS/. Russian scientists are developing a new greenhouse for the ISS, where they plan to grow grain for the subsequent preparation of flour and baking bread in space. This was stated on Monday at the conference "Man in Space" by the head of the flight of the Russian segment of the ISS, Vladimir Solovyov.
"The project of the new greenhouse that we are currently developing-the developer-the Institute of Biomedical Problems - in order to be able to develop the technology of non-operational cultivation, the technology of conveyor cultivation, growing simultaneously in four sections of a large volume, even solves the problems associated with the processing of grain into flour for baking for the first time in the world on the ISS space bread," said Solovyov.
Earlier, specialists of the Russian Research Institute of the baking industry reported that they are developing a pita bread for the cosmonauts ' diet, in which they can wrap the filling. As specified in the Research Institute, there are many requirements for "space" bread. It should be stored for a long time, but at the same time retain the traditional taste and smell. In addition, the bread must not crumble, must be resistant to mold and potato disease - a grain disease that causes the soil microorganism potato stick.
Earlier it was reported that Roscosmos is considering the possibility of continuing to operate the ISS until 2030.
