Moscow. March 25. INTERFAX-The Russian Naval logistics center in Sudan will become a guarantor of stability in the Red Sea region, said the head of the Federation Council Committee on Defense and Security Viktor Bondarev.

"In our opinion, the appearance of this object will become an additional guarantor of stability in the Red Sea region," Bondarev said at a meeting with foreign military attaches in the Federation Council.

According to the senator, the issue of creating a logistics point for the Russian Navy on the territory of the Republic of Sudan is in the area of special attention of the committee.

"The corresponding agreement between Russia and Sudan was signed by Prime Minister Mishustin," Bondarev said.

The Russian Navy is creating a logistics support point (PMTO) on the Red Sea. In December 2020, it became known that Russia and Sudan signed an agreement on the establishment of the Russian Navy's PMTO in Sudan. The document was published on the official Internet portal of legal information.

A commission of the Russian Defense Ministry visited Sudan as part of a bilateral agreement on the establishment of the PMTO, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov, who oversees the management of property and the cantonment of troops, told Interfax on February 9.

"The reconnaissance commission, which worked there, went out to clarify the technical capabilities and the necessary volume of auxiliary buildings and structures," Ivanov said, answering a question about the creation of a Russian Navy base in Sudan. "Now we will prepare a report, prepare the necessary justifications for calculating the cost and in the prescribed manner we will make a decision on the start of construction," Ivanov said at the time.

At the end of February, the Black Sea Fleet frigate Admiral Grigorovich entered the Port of Sudan for the first time, where, under the agreement of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Sudan, a logistics support point for the Russian Navy (Navy) will be created," the press service of the Black Sea Fleet reported at the time. The press service said that the presence of a logistics support point for the Russian Navy on the territory of Sudan meets the goals of maintaining peace and stability in the region, is defensive in nature and is not directed against other states.
