At the briefing, Zakharova noted that the Russian side drew attention to Japanese media reports that " Tokyo and Washington may soon hold a discussion on the prospects for deploying American missiles in Japan."
"In this regard, I would like to emphasize once again that the deployment of American ground-based medium-and shorter-range missiles in various regions of the world, including in the Asia-Pacific region, in any equipment would have an extremely destabilizing effect from the point of view of international and regional security. This would provoke a new round of the arms race with unpredictable consequences, "RIA Novosti quoted her as saying.
Zakharova added that such a development does not strengthen the security of either the United States or its allies, and the appearance of additional missile threats to Russia will entail a response from Moscow.
"We once again call on all interested parties to jointly search for ways to find a political and diplomatic solution to the situation that has developed after the collapse of the INF Treaty [the Treaty on intermediate - range and shorter-range missiles] by Washington," she said.
At the same time, the official representative of the Foreign Ministry recalled that Russia "is open to equal and constructive work to restore trust, strengthen international security and strategic stability in the world after the INF Treaty."
