Alphabet Holding (Owned by Google) has announced the closure of Loon-a project to develop Internet access using balloons flying in the stratosphere. The company considered the company's business model unstable. This is reported by CNET.
Loon CEO Alastair Westgarth explains this decision by saying that the project was never able to reduce costs to a low enough level to build a long-term and sustainable business.
Recall that as part of the Loon project, the IT giant developed access to the network in hard-to-reach regions with the help of balloons flying in the stratosphere. The project was created in 2013 by Alphabet as part of the" factory of experimental initiatives". The stratospheric balloons could transmit data at speeds of up to 20 Gbps and operated at an altitude of 18,000 meters. One of the disadvantages was the supply of equipment from solar panels, and therefore the signal was available only during daylight hours.
