In Turkey, for the first time, a radically modernized Leopard 2A4 was openly demonstrated, which now comes close to the new generation of cars in a number of characteristics.
Last week, high-ranking military officials led by the country's Defense Minister, Hulusi Akar, visited enterprises engaged in the production of armored vehicles.
Among other examples, they were shown the Leopard 2A4, which received a turret from the new Altay national tank. Thanks to this, the security and firepower have significantly increased. So, the AKKOR active defense system installed on it is able to intercept various anti-tank guided missiles and rocket-propelled grenades.
There are also sensors that detect laser radiation, a grenade launcher system that installs aerosol curtains.
A 12.7 mm remote machine gun mount is mounted on the roof of the turret.
The new fire control system with the commander's panoramic sight significantly increases the effectiveness of the main weapon-the 120-mm smoothbore gun.
Additional armor now covers the frontal part of the hull and sides.
After all the innovations, the weight of the tank exceeded 60 tons, but the engine capacity of 1500 hp is enough to maintain acceptable mobility.
The Turkish military is forced to more actively upgrade the existing Leopard 2A4 due to the fact that the Altay program faces significant difficulties, and when all the existing problems will be resolved is currently unknown.
