The Don-2N multi-functional radar, the central and most complex element of the Russian missile defense system, has been upgraded and is being prepared for testing. The performance of the computing system has increased by four orders of magnitude, and its size has decreased fourfold.
- The modernization of the receiving and transmitting parts of the Don-2N radar is being completed, and the installation and commissioning of new equipment is continuing.The work on the production and installation of the upgraded command and computing center has been completed, " Major General Sergei Grabchuk, commander of the anti-missile defense unit, told Krasnaya Zvezda.
The Don command post runs on a new computing system, the Elbrus-90S, with a performance of about 100 billion operations per second. According to open sources, the former "Elbrus-2", which occupied an entire floor in the cyclopean radar building, could perform no more than 12.5 million operations.
- The area occupied by the equipment will be reduced by 4 times, and the power consumption-by 40. Due to a significant reduction in the number of blocks and cells, the reliability and maintainability of the complex will significantly improve. The main task of the "Don-2N" is the detection, tracking, selection and calculation of the trajectories of ballistic targets, as well as targeting them with anti-missiles. Phased array antennas on the edges of the truncated pyramid that encloses the station scan the air space and near space at 4,000 kilometers in azimuth and 40,000 kilometers in altitude. They are able to distinguish an object the size of a tennis ball.
Anti-missile launch positions have also been upgraded.
