TSU researchers from the Laboratory of Chemical Technologies, together with employees of the ISE SB RAS, have created a new protective coating that is resistant to extreme temperature changes and has high chemical resistance to many solvents.

The protective coatingcan be used to protect against premature corrosion of electrical printed circuit boards and electronic components operating in conditions of high humidity and extremely low temperatures. In particular, the new coating can improve the reliability of equipment used in the Arctic. The project was supported by the Scientific Foundation of TSU named after D. I. Mendeleev.

"Now various paint coatings based on epoxy resins, polyurethanes or polyacrylates are often used as protective coatings," explains one of the project's performers, an employee of the TSU Laboratory of Chemical Technologies, a graduate student at ISEDaniel Zuza. - Apply them by aerosol spray, using a brush or by immersing the printed circuit board in the solution. These application methods have significant drawbacks, for example, it is often difficult to apply coatings in hard-to-reach places, and therefore there are continuity defects that can lead to failure of the entire board."

Along with this, the disadvantage of traditional approaches is the formation of air bubbles inside the coating, which also leads to a deterioration in the quality of the coating and, in particular, its electrical strength. Production usually takes place in several stages (application, curing) and takes from several hours to several days.

"In our case, the coating is applied from the gas phase," he saysDaniel Zuza. - We take a substance that we call a monomer (by analogy with polymerization in the traditional sense), vaporize it and transport these vapors to the plasma, where various plasma chemical reactions occur. As a result, active particles are formed, which settle on the substrate and form a coating. In terms of time, this process takes no more than 30 minutes, and the coating is smooth and mechanically strong. Since the deposition occurs from the gas phase, there is no problem with the penetration of the reaction gas into hard-to-reach places."

According to the developers, the new coating is able to protect electrical printed circuit boards and electronic components operating in an aggressive environment - with high humidity, temperature changes and in the presence of chemically aggressive substances. In particular, testing showed that the coating retains its functional properties after thermal cycling in air in the temperature range from -196°C to +130°C.

Scientists plan to continue research and expand the scope of the new coating. For example, the joint development of researchers from TSU and ISE is promising for use in outer space to protect current-carrying parts of spacecraft.
