MOSCOW, January 12. /TASS/. NPO Energomash (part of Roscosmos) has successfully tested the RD-180 and RD-191 rocket engines designed for the American Atlas launch vehicles and the Russian Angara rockets, respectively. This was reported on Tuesday in the press service of Roscosmos.
"On the eve of the new year 2021, a successful fire test of the RD-180 rocket engine was conducted at the research and testing complex of NPO Energomash named after Academician V. P. Glushko. The tests were carried out in normal mode, " Roscosmos said.
In addition, at the end of December, the RD-191 liquid-propellant rocket engine for the Angara launch vehicle was also successfully tested, the press service noted.
Atlas V is a single-use two-stage medium or heavy launch vehicle (depending on the configuration). The first stage is equipped with a Russian RD-180 oxygen-kerosene rocket engine developed by NPO Energomash. The Russian company won the competition to create an engine for American missiles in 1996.
The basic RD-191 is a single-chamber engine with a vertically positioned turbopump unit. Its development began in late 1998. This engine with afterburning of oxidizing gas is designed for the family of domestic launch vehicles "Angara". The design of the product is based on the design of RD-170/171 engines.
