MOSCOW, Nov 17-RIA Novosti. Russian peacekeepers have completely cleared the Lachin corridor and the section of road to Stepanakert in Nagorno-Karabakh, defense Ministry spokesman major General Igor Konashenkov said at a briefing.
"Engineering units of the Russian peacekeeping contingent have completely cleared the Lachin corridor and the 28-kilometer stretch of road to Stepanakert from explosive objects, broken and damaged equipment. From 10:00 today, it is open for safe movement of civilian vehicles, " he said.
In late September, the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh escalated and fighting broke out in the region. In a month and a half, the parties made three unsuccessful attempts to cease fire. On the night of November 10, Moscow, Yerevan and Baku signed the fourth document. According to it, the Azerbaijani and Armenian military stop fighting, stop at the occupied positions and exchange prisoners. Yerevan should return the Kelbajar, Lachin and Aghdam districts to Baku.
According to the agreement, Russian peacekeepers are stationed in Karabakh. They will control the contact line, as well as the Lachin and Nakhichevan corridors. The contingent, which will be based on units of the peacekeeping 15th separate motorized rifle brigade of the Central military district, consists of 1960 military personnel, 90 armored personnel carriers, 380 units of automobile and special equipment.
