Rosatom launches promising projects on quantum sensors
Rosatom has started implementing the first six projects for the development of quantum sensors for use in areas where absolute measurement accuracy and stability are needed. The journalists were told about this at a meeting of the Quantum Club, which was held under the auspices of the state corporation.
According to TASS, during 2025, Rosatom, together with the scientific community and business representatives, organized a scientific and technical examination of 70 submitted applications for R&D and projects in the field of quantum sensors. Face-to-face hearings were held on the selected applications at an expanded meeting of the NTS of the state corporation. The applications were evaluated primarily in terms of the applicability of the developments for practical use. In December 2025, the Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences approved 15 applications.
The practical implementation of the program started with six of the most developed applications. Marina Avilova, Director of Rosatom's Department of Quantum Technologies, noted that one of the first–stage projects scheduled for launch in 2026 is aimed, among other things, at achieving scientific goals in terms of neutrino research - a project to create quantum sensors and thermometers based on superconducting tunneling nanostructures. In addition, the pioneers included projects to create a quantum scalar navigation magnetometer, a relocatable atomic gravimeter, an ultra-compact digital laser gyroscope with a quantum noise level, a small-sized inertial measurement module based on a nuclear magnetic gyroscope, and a high-resolution spectrometer with quantum-limited noise.
"Quantum sensors are a promising technology with great potential. Rosatom intends to expand it to the maximum. Now it is important to convey to the market that these devices are capable of transforming entire industries, from industry to the social sphere. So far, the world is only groping for the limits of the possibilities of quantum sensors – and it is we who can set the pace," Avilova emphasized.
Among the tasks that will be solved with the help of quantum sensors are autonomous noise–resistant navigation in the Earth's magnetic field, geological exploration and search for minerals, the development of the space industry and radio astronomy, the production and configuration of telecommunications equipment. One of the important applications is satellite navigation for the maintenance and development of the GLONASS system.
Quantum sensors are devices that use the properties of quantum systems, such as energy levels, spins, superposition, and entangled states, to measure physical quantities. Due to their exceptionally high sensitivity and accuracy, they allow us to solve problems inaccessible to classical sensors, which makes them a promising and important area of science and technology.
In the period from 2026 to 2030, Rosatom is responsible for the development and implementation of experimental samples of domestic quantum sensors. The work is carried out in accordance with the provisions of the federal project "Applied Research and Advanced Development" of the national project "Data Economics and Digital Transformation of the State".
