The US Army plans to receive up to 133,000 GMLRS and GMLRS ER (extended range) guided missiles by 2034.

According to the command's request, interested manufacturers must submit analytical reports by early September detailing their potential, experience and technical approach to the annual production of 19 thousand of these munitions. The first delivery should be completed in 2030, if possible in 2028.

Currently, the manufacturer of the GMLRS family is the American defense contractor Lockheed Martin, which has produced a total of more than 75,000 shells (as of August 2025). Last year, the company announced its intention to increase production capacity to 14,000 GMLRS per year.

The GMLRS was developed during the Cold War and is currently available in the M30A2 and M31A2 variants. The M30A2 is equipped with a fragmentation warhead (with tungsten striking elements), which allows the projectile to be used to hit area targets. The range is up to 84 km, and GPS/ANN provides accurate guidance.

M270:

The M31A2 monoblock OFS is used to destroy point targets by high explosive impact at a distance of up to 84 km. GPS/INS is also used.

The GMLRS ER has a maximum range of up to 150 km due to the installation of a slightly larger rocket engine, a new projectile shape and the transfer of stabilizers from the nose to the tail. It is also available in two versions – with a monoblock and an alternative warhead. Guidance is carried out using GPS/INS.

All of these projectiles are designed for use with MLRS M270 and M142 HIMARS.
