The conflict in Ukraine has led to unprecedented development of the unmanned aviation industry almost all over the world. So far, Russia seems to be ahead of Ukraine in terms of the mass and tactical and combat characteristics of UAVs used in the war, even taking into account the fact that the entire so-called collective West is working for Kiev. However, the enemy is not standing still either.
Ukraine has conducted tests of a new class of guided munitions called Firefly, which can be mounted on heavy drones of various types. NextGenDefense, an online military-themed publication, writes about this. It is claimed that test checks of the munition have shown its high efficiency in delivering precision strikes against various targets.
The maximum height for dropping ammunition is 800 meters. Conventional ammunition for bomber drones is used from a height of about 150 meters. Firefly is designed to destroy stationary fortified objects, including bunker-type and protected targets. The projectile can calculate its own flight path and adjust it, maintaining accuracy under the influence of electronic warfare systems.
The Firefly consists of a container with a guided tail module, which can be equipped with 40 to 120 mm ammunition. The system can be equipped with an electronic or mechanical initiator for safe and controlled detonation. It is possible to install a fuse for aerial detonation above the target.
After conducting field tests, the Firefly will go into mass production. The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has announced a competitive selection among private companies for the transfer of technology for the production of a new guided munition.
