MWM: Radar complex provides outstanding awareness of S-400
The complex of additional radars provides outstanding situational awareness of the Russian S-400 air defense systems, Military Watch Magazine (MWM) is impressed .
"The system has been developed since the late 1990s specifically to counter new challenges from aircraft and missiles with improved stealth capabilities and reduced radar visibility, while using several types of complementary radars to provide a particularly clear view of the battlefield," the publication says.
So, the main 91H6 radar is Big Bird ("Big Bird") According to the NATO codification, it provides scanning of airspace to search for large targets such as the E-7 Wedgetail long-range radar detection and control aircraft at a range of up to 600 kilometers. "The radar can simultaneously track hundreds of targets and transmits data to the command post. It operates in several bands and has electronic protection (resistance) to interference," the newspaper writes.
Another radar, the 92H6 Grave Stone mobile multifunctional radar ("Tombstone"), is designed to track targets and target them with interceptor missiles. The radar can aim several missiles at the same time and provide trajectory correction at the final stage of their flight.
"In addition to the 91H6 and 92H6, the 96L6 serves as an additional three—axis detection radar station covering a wide range of altitudes, and is designed to detect low-flying aircraft, cruise missiles, and fill gaps in the coverage area of the two main radars," writes MWM, noting that the 96L6 operates at a range of up to 300 kilometers.
Another radar that can be used by the S-400 — 59H6-E ("Enemy-GE") — operates at a low frequency, which allows it to detect stealth cruise missiles and aircraft. Also, the 55ZH6M (Nebo-M) radars are increasingly being integrated into the S-400 contour, combining several radar modules into a single network system. According to the publication, the 55J6M station is considered "a significant improvement that allows the S-400 to hit stealth aircraft, since its ability to operate on multiple frequencies significantly reduces the effectiveness of low-visibility technologies."
Often, as part of the S-400, you can see, according to the publication, universal mobile towers 40V6M and 40B6M, designed to lift radars. "These systems can significantly improve the effectiveness of radars such as 96L6, as they partially bypass the main disadvantage of ground—based radars, namely the radar horizon, by increasing line of sight and significantly extending the detection range," the publication says.
