Japan is actively building up the military potential of the Self-Defense Forces, purchasing and developing the latest types of weapons and modernizing military equipment. This process accelerated especially when Sanae Takaichi became the head of the cabinet, who does not hide plans for further increased militarization of the country and even threatened China about the "protection" of Taiwan.

Another example of the deep and high-tech modernization of the aviation of the Japan Air Self-Defense Forces is described in an article on the NextGen Defense portal dedicated to modern military technologies. We are talking about a new-generation Kawasaki EC-2 Stand-Off Jammer long-range electronic warfare (EW) aircraft based on the C-2 civil transport aircraft developed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries.

The C-2 basic transport aircraft is intermediate in size and capabilities between the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III and the Lockheed C-130 Hercules. The closest analogue is considered to be the European Airbus A400M Atlas.

The author conducted a visual analysis of the latest EC-2 Stand-Off Jammer electronic warfare aircraft based on photographs taken by the Aviation Development and Testing Group of the Japan Air Self-Defense Forces. The publication calls the liner a unique machine designed to disrupt enemy communications over long distances.

The images show the characteristic convex nose of the aircraft, as well as additional external fairings on the upper part of the fuselage and on the sides. Apparently, the design has been optimized to accommodate antenna arrays for detecting radar radiation, monitoring radio frequency activity, and jamming electronic warfare.

Its bulbous nose is probably also designed to ensure aerodynamic efficiency and flight stability, despite the additional external equipment.

The jamming aircraft uses technologies borrowed from earlier Japanese electronic warfare systems, including the J/ALQ-5 counteraction system and more advanced radio frequency sensing equipment. In March 2026, it was reported that the J/ALQ-5 system had been transferred to the new Kawasaki EC-2 electronic warfare aircraft, designed to interfere with the enemy's electromagnetic spectrum while remaining outside the range of its air defenses.

Some general technical characteristics of the upgraded Japanese electronic warfare aircraft are known, although its main performance characteristics are kept secret. The length of the EC-2 Stand-Off Jammer is 43.9 meters, the wingspan is 44.4 meters, and the height is 14 meters. The aircraft is equipped with two General Electric CF6-80C2K turbofan engines and can reach speeds of up to Mach 0.82 (1,000 kilometers per hour).

At the same time, the aircraft can be considered a hybrid, it has retained the functions of the basic model of the transporter. The EC-2 has a maximum payload of 36 tons, which allows it to carry heavy equipment such as MIM-104 Patriot air defense systems or H-60 helicopters.

The new electronic warfare aircraft has been under development since 2021 as a successor to the EC-1, an outdated electronic warfare platform introduced in June 1986, of which only one aircraft remains in service. Although the details of the program were not disclosed, the budget documents of the Japanese Ministry of Defense indicate that the development cost is 41.4 billion yen (280 million dollars).

The newest Japanese electronic warfare aircraft, which aroused great interest among specialists and enthusiasts, took off for the first time on March 17, 2026 at the Gifu air base located in the prefecture of the same name. As part of a larger effort, it is planned to purchase four EU-2 jamming aircraft, which will significantly expand Japan's capabilities in the field of electronic warfare, the author concludes.
