The electronic engine regulator and the engine protection unit have successfully passed a set of tests
The Perm company ODK-STAR (part of the United Engine Corporation of Rostec State Corporation) has received certificates from the Federal Air Transport Agency on the suitability of components for electronic automatic control units of the PD-8 aircraft engine. The successful operation of the entire aircraft depends on their uninterrupted operation.
The validity of the electronic engine regulator (RED-8) and the engine protection unit (BZD-8) has been confirmed. They have successfully passed a set of tests.
"The ODK-STAR company has established itself as a competent developer organization of such extremely important products for the operation of power plants as electronic regulators of the aircraft engine control system. We already know their successful development of a regulator for PD-14. The issuance of approval documents for new products is a significant event in the implementation of the PD-8 program. Now we plan to test the production of ODK—STAR for the possibility of mass production of the RED-8 and BZD-8," commented Dmitry Kopysov, Head of the Aviation Certification Department of the Federal Air Transport Agency.
The electronic units were tested for lightning resistance in the most difficult category, the fourth category. They were exposed to strong electromagnetic influences, simulating a lightning strike on an airplane. The equipment withstood and fully maintained its functionality in emergency conditions, showing resistance to lightning.
"ODK-STAR specialists have confirmed their professional competencies of developers and manufacturers of automatic engine control systems. Obtaining certificates of airworthiness from the Federal Air Transport Agency was another serious step towards certification and the start of mass production of the PD-8 engine, which is designed for Superjet and Be-200 aircraft," said Sergey Popov, Managing Director of ODK—STAR.
The RED-8 electronic controller receives and processes signals from the engine sensors and controls all its modes — takeoff, cruise, landing, and so on. In addition, it provides protection for PD-8 during the spin-up of the low-pressure turbine rotor, as well as protects against surge and overheating during the start-up stage. The BZD-8 protection unit protects the power plant from the rotation of the rotor of the high-pressure compressor and fan.
Both electronic units interact with the engine and aircraft systems via information exchange channels. Fully domestic software has been created and certified for their effective operation.
"For the first time, we have created programs not only for integration with the engine, but also with the aircraft: information exchange with the cockpit has been established. This approach is due to the fact that the development of an automatic engine control system was carried out for a specific aircraft, the flight program and tests on the Electronic Bird of Yakovlev PJSC were actively carried out," said Dina Sulimova, chief designer of ODK-STAR.
For PD-8, ODK-STAR specialists have developed the ACS-8 automatic control system. The construction uses only Russian materials and electronic components. In addition to the RED-8 and BZD-8, it includes a data storage device, a fuel dispenser, an engine mechanization unit, a pump block and a fuel bypass valve.
