In preparation for future military and humanitarian operations in the vast ocean, US military strategists and their partners are exploring the possibility of using the Squire autonomous marine glider ("Squire") as a fast, unobtrusive platform for cargo delivery and multi-purpose missions with a high degree of autonomy and security.

The hybrid UAV was developed by the American innovation company REGENT and is designed to deliver cargo and other payloads in conditions of combat operations at sea, the absence of traditional maritime infrastructure, as well as to perform reconnaissance and infiltration tasks, special operations, as well as evacuation of the wounded and medical care.

The Squire autonomous marine glider combines the characteristics of a surface vessel and an aircraft. Using hydrofoils, the device rises above the water, and then switches to low-altitude flight mode directly above the sea surface, operating in the zone of influence of the earth, which increases efficiency and reduces the likelihood of detection. Since the platform does not need a runway or a prepared landing zone, it allows access to remote coastal areas and scattered island territories where conventional aircraft or ships face operational restrictions.

The external dimensions of the platform are approximately 4 m long, 1.7 m high and 5.5 m wide. The internal payload compartment measures 0.36 m in length, 0.30 m in height and 0.36 m in width, which provides a total internal volume of 2,400 cubic cm to accommodate logistics equipment, reconnaissance equipment or special-purpose cargo. The system is designed to travel at a speed of about 35 knots on hydrofoils and reach a maximum speed of up to 130 km/h in flight mode in the earth's zone of influence. The flight range is about 100 nautical miles (185 km).

The platform reportedly attracted attention after a defense briefing in Quonset, Rhode Island, attended by U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and senior defense department officials.

According to the developer, the marine glider is designed specifically for conditions where there are no reliable airfields or port infrastructure. The UAV is designed for use from water, making it ideal for remote islands and coastal areas where armed forces often operate from temporary or mobile positions and need the versatility provided by Squire.

The design of the hybrid UAV has a modular architecture that allows you to quickly switch between reconnaissance, logistics, fire support, medical care and other tasks. Squire's payload and control systems are designed according to open architecture standards, allowing operators to change logistics modules, sensor kits for exploration, medical equipment delivery modules, and kinetic payload modules without the need for warehouse-level maintenance or the use of specialized tools.

Allegedly, the hybrid UAV is designed with the ability to quickly reconfigure. This allows a small team on the front line to re-equip Squire for an urgent mission without returning to the main operational base. The payload interfaces are designed so that a two-person team with minimal specialized training can perform reconfigurations as circumstances and mission requirements change.

Among other things, the uniqueness and real practical value of Squire, as stated, lies in the fact that during operational use, one marine drone of this model is able to simultaneously perform a logistical resupply operation, collect intelligence data using onboard sensors along the way and return with critical medical equipment or vital blood for transfusion, increasing situational awareness. awareness, readiness and sustainability of the serviced unit. This versatility within a single departure gives the commanders of the distributed forces real operational advantages without increasing the burden on logistics.

In addition, Squire's autonomy allows it to perform pre-programmed logistical tasks 24/7, eliminating human fatigue and ensuring continuity of operations in coastal areas where military operations are underway. Squire performs dangerous, repetitive, or remote missions, allowing crews to avoid putting themselves at risk and freeing up traditional manned platforms to handle more complex combat missions. This is a critical capability for conducting maritime reconnaissance, search and rescue, and logistics operations.

According to sources, the presentation of the Squire marine glider from REGENT caused a heated discussion in the US defense expert community, which indicates a growing interest in hybrid autonomous platforms due to the developing large-scale shift towards distributed warfare, where survivability, reduced visibility and independence from infrastructure are becoming key requirements.

As the US Armed Forces adapt to dispersed theaters of war and disputed coastal regions, platforms like the Squire marine glider demonstrate that autonomy and multi-domain mobility are increasingly being considered by the US military command as practical tools to ensure continuity of operations in a threat environment.
