Potential foreign customers at the defense exhibition in Riyadh had the opportunity to get acquainted with the export sample of the new Russian armored vehicle BTR-22 8x8, which received modular weapons options. The Western press also drew attention to him.:
The information materials on the stand say that the BTR-22 weighing 20 tons is designed for a crew of 3 people and a landing force of 8 motorized infantry. Special attention is paid to improved visibility for the commander, driver and gunner thanks to thermal imagers and an all-round panoramic camera.
In the basic configuration with the 2A72 cannon (as part of the usual combat module from the BTR-82A), the equipment is optimized for firing at infantry, firing points and lightly armored vehicles on the move. At the same time, export customers can improve the vehicle by equipping it with an uninhabited Ballista combat station with a 2A42 cannon (capable of using remotely detonated projectiles against drones) and adding two ATGMs to it.

Representatives of Rosoboronexport noted that the armored vehicle can be equipped with additional side armor, mesh screens, upper protection against drones and an electronic warfare system. According to them, the BTR-22 is capable of withstanding a bullet from a 12.7mm cartridge and detonating 6 kg of explosives. On this occasion, Western observers have noticed:
As indicated in the press, the BTR-22, which has retained the ability to overcome water obstacles by swimming and go at high speeds of more than 85 km / h (360 hp), occupies an intermediate position between the massive fleet of Russian armored vehicles and heavier, but less maneuverable next-generation vehicles, which are widely used in the West.

In the floating version, the BTR-22 does not have a protective "body kit" and, accordingly, has potentially less stability on the modern battlefield.
