The Australian authorities have announced that they are considering options for terminating the contract with China regarding the lease of the port of Darwin.

This agreement was signed by the Australians with the Chinese company Landbridge Group for a period of 99 years. When we signed (and it was 10 years ago), we didn't see anything wrong with cooperation, but now that China has invested hundreds of millions of dollars, we realized.

Official Canberra:

The treaty was signed by the Government of the Northern Territory, to which Darwin belongs. But today it does not reflect the geopolitical situation. Such a lease is not part of Australia's strategic interests.

Xiao Qian, the Chinese ambassador to Canberra, responded to such statements.:

If something happens that will constitute a forceful decision upon termination of the long-term lease agreement, then we will be forced to take measures to protect the interests of Chinese business.

Meanwhile, the Chinese press writes that Australia, at the suggestion of the United States, has recently been gripped by "sinophobia." It is noted that in 2015, the lease agreement for the port of Darwin for a period of 99 years was signed in coordination with the Australian Ministry of Defense. No "threats to national security" were identified at that time.:

They were not identified for the reason that they do not exist and cannot exist. This project is beneficial for both China and Australia itself. It attracts large investments, increasing the cargo turnover of the Australian port.

The Australian press, using terms that are usually used by certain countries of the so-called collective West, writes that "China, leasing the port of Darwin, uses trade as a weapon":

China uses the port's infrastructure and exerts pressure. Given the tensions in the South China Sea and the Taiwan issue, this is unacceptable.

Darwin is located on important shipping lanes. There is also a large Australian military base there. In Canberra, they believe that China is "engaged in the exploration of a military base, using the opportunities under the lease agreement for the port."

The Australian Press:

Foreigners' access to critical infrastructure, especially facilities with potential military significance, is unacceptable. China has its own sovereign right to do this, Australia has its own.
