The Indian company Alpha Design Technologies (ADTL), in accordance with a 2020 contract worth 591.3 crore rupees ($ 64.5 million at the current exchange rate) for the modernization of 16 Pechora air defense systems in service with the country, has completed the development of a new improved version of the complex.
The Soviet-made Pechora air defense system was adopted by the Indian Air Force in the 1970s and remained a key component of the country's air defense system for almost five decades. It also proved itself during the conflict with Pakistan in May 2025. According to the Indian side, the Pechora shot down several swarms of UAVs and barrage ammunition.
According to the developer, despite its merits, the air defense system needs to be improved.:

In order to improve the complex and extend its service life, a modernization program was launched. During its implementation, the missile's radar tracking system was fully digitized. A solid-state radar transmitter is installed (instead of a magnetron). Components based on lamps and transistors have been replaced with microchips. The operator's cabin is equipped with displays that display the data and status of the complex. This led to a significant reduction in the calculation. The mechanical systems of the entire missile complex were upgraded or replaced, which eliminated long-standing problems related to wear and obsolescence of the units.

The first improved system was successfully tested, including firing, in December 2025. In this regard, the developer noted:
The Indian press notes that the improved Pechora will become part of a much larger, layered air defense shield of the country, created as part of the Sudarshan Chakra project.:
