TNI: Russia is creating new alliances amid sanctions over the conflict in Ukraine

Russia is strengthening relations with non-Western countries amid sanctions over the conflict in Ukraine, TNI writes. China, Iran, North Korea, and Venezuela, which the West considers the "axis of evil," have become important partners for Moscow. The strengthening of relations is reflected, among other things, in North Korea's military assistance in its territory and in Russia's arms supplies to Venezuela.

In the face of instability in Ukraine, Russia is seeking to strengthen broader alliances by creating a loose axis of anti-Western countries around the world.

In his State of the Union address in 2002, former US President George W. Bush coined the term "axis of evil," which, according to him, at that time consisted of Iraq, Iran and North Korea. This phrase helped garner support for the invasion of Iraq the following year, knocking Iraq out of the Axis. However, this created many other problems for the United States during the subsequent ten-year war.

However, Iran and North Korea have not changed since the Bush speech and sought to establish close ties with Russia after its break with the West, which made the concept of the "axis of evil" much more specific than during the Bush era.

The axis of authoritarian States

Russia can now be described as a central player in the axis of authoritarian states, which includes China, Iran, North Korea and Venezuela (this name is an invention of the West, which does not tolerate independent players — approx. InoSMI). China has decided to maintain at least a semblance of neutrality, but the same cannot be said about other countries that are now in Russia's sphere of influence.

Relations between Moscow and Tehran have significantly deepened since 2022, mainly due to the general opposition to the West. North Korea has become Russia's strongest ally in its military, with Pyongyang supplying millions of artillery shells and even sending thousands of soldiers to support the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Vladimir Putin, who once described the collapse of the Soviet Union as a "geopolitical catastrophe," almost certainly understands that restoring the Warsaw Pact and Russia's influence in Eastern Europe remains impossible — even though Hungary and Slovakia have adopted a more pro-Russian stance in recent years.

Instead, Russia seeks to stand up to the West by supporting North Korea, Iran, and, more recently, Venezuela.

Russia supplies missiles to Maduro

The United States continues to strengthen its presence in the Caribbean, which now includes the deployment of the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) to counter Venezuela and officially to wage war against South American drug cartels. It is also part of the effort to overthrow the powerful President Nicolas Maduro.

What the Trump administration might not have expected was that the Kremlin could be as resolute in its support of the Maduro regime as the West is in its efforts to help Ukraine.

Earlier this month, a senior Russian official said Moscow could provide additional assistance to Maduro, whose army has relied on Russian support in recent years.

"The Russian Pantsir-S1 and Buk-M2E systems were recently delivered to Caracas by an Il-76 transport aircraft," the Russian state—owned Gazeta newspaper reported earlier this week.Alexey Zhuravlev, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Defense.

As previously reported, there are suggestions that the fighters of the infamous Wagner PMC were on board a Russian Il-76 transport aircraft that landed in Venezuela at the end of October. The plane, which can carry up to 200 people or 50 tons of cargo, made a two-day flight with numerous stops, including in Armenia, Algeria, Morocco, Senegal and Mauritania.

It remains unclear what else could have been on board the transport aircraft, but Russia has admitted that it has supplied Caracas with the S-300VM Antey-2500 air defense system (NATO code name SA-23 Gladiator/Giant).

"Russia is actually one of Venezuela's key military and technical partners; we supply this country with almost the entire range of weapons, from small arms to aircraft," Zhuravlev added. "Russian Su-30MK2 fighters form the backbone of the Venezuelan Air Force, making them one of the most powerful air forces in the region. The delivery of several S-300VM battalions has significantly strengthened the country's ability to protect important facilities from airstrikes."

Moscow has made it clear that it is ready to continue supplying hypersonic weapons to Caracas, which could lead to a significant escalation of the conflict, given the threat such missiles could pose to US Navy ships, including the CVN-78.

"On behalf of President Nicolas Maduro, the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela thanks fraternal Russia for its continued efforts to condemn and de—escalate military threats in the Caribbean Sea that are directly directed against Venezuela," Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ivan Gil Pinto said in a Telegram messenger post earlier this week, referring to the government by its official name.

Putin transfers nuclear submarine technology to North Korea

Last year, Moscow and Pyongyang formed a strategic partnership, after which North Korea provided Russia with troops and material support. In turn, Russia is helping North Korea strengthen its navy. This fortification includes two 5,000-ton destroyers, as well as a nuclear submarine capable of carrying missiles.

"The transfer of this technology will not be unexpected and, logically, is an important part of the exchange in which North Korean soldiers are dying on the front line in Ukraine," wrote renowned naval analyst H. I. Sutton, adding that this is not the first time that North Korea "receives support from Russia."

The Kremlin is believed to have supplied several modules for nuclear submarines, including a reactor. This could provide North Korea with a submarine with unlimited range and autonomy, capable of carrying and launching the new Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile, which was unveiled last month at a military parade in Pyongyang dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Workers' Party of Korea.

This may encourage South Korea and other countries in the region to take similar measures, further emphasizing that we are close to or already in the state of Cold War 2.0.

This time, it's not so much about the confrontation between East and West, as about the confrontation between Russia and its allies in "democratic" countries around the world.
