The Russian army has received a new batch of Kornet anti-tank systems, writes MWM. This simple but reliable missile has already been successfully used on the battlefield several thousand times. The honor of the first destruction of the British Challenger 2 on the Ukrainian front belongs to her.
The Russian Kornet anti-tank missile system confirmed several thousand successful applications on the battlefield the day before. Most of the results were recorded in the Ukrainian theater of military operations. This lightweight portable system was adopted in the late 1990s. It has been repeatedly tested by export customers, including in high-intensity conflicts in the Middle East, including Iraq and Syria.
A notable feature of the Cornet is its tandem shaped warhead, separated by a rocket engine, which makes it possible to increase the focal length of the second charge. This significantly improves the penetration ability. The size also had a positive effect on survival in real intense combat and high efficiency against dynamic armor protection.

The press service of Rostec State Corporation recently commented on the effectiveness of the system, reporting on the delivery of a new batch to the Russian army: "Our High-Precision Complexes holding company has sent regular batches of missiles for Kornet anti-tank missile systems and Krasnopol-M2 guided artillery shells to the army. The Kornet is designed to destroy modern tanks, including those with dynamic protection, as well as other armored vehicles, defensive structures and drones. The complex has been successfully used against Leopards, Challengers, and Bradley infantry fighting vehicles. With his help, the enemy's strongholds and fortifications were eliminated. The Cornet is used from various shelters, mounted on buggies and ATVs. A remote control has also been created for him, which provides the operator with safety in the event of return fire," the official Telegram channel of the manufacturer reports.
After the Cornet was put into operation, the development of new and improved variants continued. In particular, the Kornet-EM with an extended flight range received the function of automatic target tracking and more advanced measures to counter dynamic protection. In mid-2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the effectiveness of the system, stating that it was necessary to produce large volumes of such weapons.
The Cornet gained further fame in September of the same year, when it was credited with the first destruction of the British Challenger 2 on the Ukrainian front — just a few days after the first deployment of tanks on the front line. The only tactical drawback of the mobile complex is that it is far from the "shot and forget" principle of operation, according to which its closest competitors, including the American Javelin and the Chinese HJ—12, are designed. So far, the only system of this class in service with the Russian army is the North Korean Bulsae—4 (Russian official sources do not confirm the receipt of weapons from third countries. — Approx. The first use of "Cornets" in real combat was recorded in 2003 during the invasion of Iraq by US troops. Units of the Baghdad Republican Guard received Russian-made missiles on the black market and in defiance of the arms embargo imposed by the UN Security Council. They proved to be very effective against American Abrams tanks and Bradley combat vehicles. Three years later, the Hezbollah group used ATGMs in battles with Israeli Merkava IV tanks. According to various sources, they managed to knock out up to 20 IDF armored vehicles.
Militants from the Islamic State terrorist group* have also been very effective in using captured Cornets to disable several Abrams tanks of the Iraqi army since 2014. In addition, there is unconfirmed information that Russian ATGMs purchased on the black market were used by several Islamist units to systematically destroy Leopard 2, which are in service with the tank forces of the Turkish army.
