The prototype was presented for the first time at the XIV St. Petersburg International Gas Forum in St. Petersburg.
The United Engine Corporation of Rostec State Corporation has developed a new NK-36ST-32 industrial engine as part of import substitution. This is the first domestic development with a capacity of 32 MW for transporting gas through main pipelines. The prototype engine was presented for the first time at the XIV St. Petersburg International Gas Forum in St. Petersburg.
The latest NK-36ST-32 gas turbine engine was developed and manufactured at the Samara-based ODK-Kuznetsov enterprise. It was created on the basis of the NK-36ST-25 serial engine with a capacity of 25 MW using modern technologies and solutions. Constructive continuity with the base NK-36ST-25 engine will minimize the cost of upgrading existing compressor stations.
"Rostec State Corporation is solving the strategic task of ensuring the country's technological sovereignty in the most knowledge-intensive and high-tech industries. Among them is the modernization of the infrastructure of the fuel and energy complex. Our UEC already produces the NK-36ST engine with a capacity of 25 MW, which is successfully operated at fuel and energy complex facilities. However, today one of the most demanded units in the gas industry are installations with a capacity of 32 MW. Previously, there were no domestic developments in this class. The creation of a new engine will solve the issue of import substitution, which opens up new opportunities for the development of the Russian gas industry," said Oleg Yevtushenko, Executive Director of Rostec State Corporation.
The new development has increased power and high efficiency of 38%. According to these characteristics, it surpasses all Russian gas turbine engines for transporting gas through main gas pipelines. In addition, the new engine has a reduced fuel consumption per unit of power of at least 6%, as well as a high designated resource of 120,000 hours. An important advantage of the NK-36ST-32 is its environmental friendliness: the engine is equipped with a low-emission combustion chamber (MEC). Its use ensures that the new engine meets all environmental standards.
"United Engine Corporation serially produces a wide range of products for the Russian fuel and energy complex. Industrial engines of the NK series are among the most in demand. Currently, more than 630 engines of this series are successfully operated at fuel and energy complex facilities. The prototype of the new NK-36ST-32 engine successfully passed the first stage of complex factory tests in September 2025. The engine reached a rated power of 32 MW and confirmed the declared technical characteristics," said Alexander Grachev, General Director of the UEC, member of the Bureau of the Board of the All—Russian industrial employers' association Union of Machine Builders of Russia.
The designers of ODK-Kuznetsov are already developing a modification of the NK-36ST-32 for the southern regions of Russia. It will be able to operate in extreme conditions — at temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius and in the highlands.
UEC has all the necessary competencies for the maintenance and repair of industrial engines. This guarantees complete maintenance of the equipment and ensures its reliable operation throughout the entire life cycle of gas turbine engines. ODK Engineering is a comprehensive supplier of gas turbine units and aggregates based on NK-36ST-32 engines.
The new product will be presented to the general public at the Gazprom — Territory of Technological Leadership exhibition, which will be held as part of the XIV St. Petersburg International Gas Forum in St. Petersburg from October 7 to 10. The St. Petersburg International Gas Forum is an annual meeting place for oil and gas industry leaders to discuss topical industry issues and demonstrate breakthrough solutions. The forum program includes more than 110 events. The topics include geological exploration, gas production and transportation, underground storage, refining and liquefaction, as well as issues of international cooperation, sustainable development and digital transformation of the industry.
