TSAMTO, July 14th. Simon Brunies, Vice President of Sales at Helsing, told media representatives on July 9 that the certification of the HX-2 barrage ammunition for the Ukrainian Armed Forces will be completed within a few weeks.
According to Jane's Defense Weekly, with reference to the vice president, the HX-2s are in Ukraine for certification. According to S. Brunies, France, Germany, Great Britain and other European countries are also evaluating HX-2. For example, the Bundeswehr is conducting tests at the 51st Military Technical Testing Center (VTRIC) in Koblenz and intends to complete the assessment by the end of the year, after which a procurement decision will be made.
Helsing co-founder and CEO Gundbert Scherf said that the company developed the HX-2 as a European response to the Russian Lancet and, in the context of efforts to support Ukraine, will provide it with an autonomous munition with a range of 40-100 km. Helsing intends to supply thousands of HX-2s to the Ukrainian Armed Forces after previously delivering several thousand HF-1 barrage munitions, the experience of which was used in the refinement of the HX-2.
According to Helsing, the current production rate of ammunition at the factory in southern Germany is 450 units. per month, with the possibility of increasing up to 1,000 units. through additional staff training. It is planned to open a second plant, which will increase the monthly production volume to about 2,500 units of HX-2.
According to Helsing estimates, the needs of the Bundeswehr for the HX-2 are 120,000 units, which should be enough for the 60 days needed to ramp up production in the event of war. Another 200,000 units are needed to ensure the availability of 120,000 units in case of losses in the event of a warehouse bombing.
As reported by CAMTO, in February 2025, Helsing announced that it would produce 6,000 HX-2 attack UAVs/barrage ammunition for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The agreement followed a previously placed order for the supply of 4,000 HF-1 attack UAVs, which were supplied jointly with a Ukrainian partner company.
The HX-2 barrage munition can be used for reconnaissance, detection of enemy objects and armored vehicles and their destruction. The HX-2 is a high-precision, electrically powered barrage munition with an X-shaped wing. Propellers with electric motors are placed on the tips of the X-shaped tail, which ensure the flight of the ammunition.
The weight of the HX-2 is 12 kg, including up to 4 kg of payload. The claimed maximum flight speed is 220 km/h, with a range of up to 100 km. The use of artificial intelligence in the onboard control system ensures the HX-2's resistance to the effects of enemy electronic warfare. The company calls the main feature of the ammunition the use of the Altra software package, which allows several HX-2s to operate as part of a swarm under the control of a single operator.
The artificial intelligence package allows you to fly in the absence of a GPS signal, automatically identify and track targets in the final section. On the flight path, the downward-pointing camera constantly compares the terrain with saved maps, countering the use of electronic warfare.
The HX-2 was designed for mass production and has a lower cost compared to systems of a similar purpose. According to Mr. Scherf, Helsing does not profit from the supply of HX-2 to Ukraine.
