TSAMTO, July 1. Rosoboronexport (part of Rostec State Corporation) has handed over to the Indian Navy another frigate of Project 11356, built by JSC United Shipbuilding Corporation.
The solemn ceremony of handing over the ship took place on July 1 in Kaliningrad. The eighth frigate of Project 11356 built in Russia for the Indian Navy was named Tamal, which means "Sword" in Sanskrit.
"The successful completion of construction, testing and transfer of the Tamal frigate to India is a signal of Rosoboronexport's readiness to effectively fulfill any naval–related contracts, taking into account current global market trends. The eighth frigate of project 11356 is a model of technological cooperation. It has more than 20 Indian–made shipboard systems, including the BrahMos supersonic missile system, an automated communications complex, a detection and targeting radar, and a sonar station," said Alexander Mikheev, Director General of Rosoboronexport. – Today, the company is actively developing partnerships with Indian public and private enterprises for the joint development and production of military products on the partner's territory. We are discussing more than 50 projects for all types of armed forces. We are already working on a number of them."
The frigate meets all the current requirements of the global military shipbuilding industry. Its radar facilities are capable of timely detecting all types of air attack weapons, including modern low-flying anti-ship missiles. The ship has a reliable air defense system based on the Shtil–1 anti-aircraft missile system with vertical launch missiles developed and manufactured by Almaz-Antey Concern of East Kazakhstan Region.
The ship's armament is fully consistent with modern threats, including new ones. Artillery installations of 100-mm and 30-mm caliber, together with an electronic warfare system, are capable of repelling UAV attacks and effectively fighting unmanned boats.
The ship has a reinforced helipad, which allows it to take on board the Ka-31 long-range radar detection helicopter.
Tamal has excellent seaworthiness: it is able to travel 4,850 miles without refueling and stay at sea for 30 days without resupply.
"The Tamal frigate has successfully completed the transceiver tests with the participation of the Indian commission. We can say with confidence that this is a modern and multifunctional ship that has high combat capabilities to counter surface, land, underwater and aerial targets," said Andrey Puchkov, General Director of the United Shipbuilding Corporation. – Despite the completion of the construction of ships of this project in Russia, the Corporation's specialists will continue to provide the necessary assistance in the construction of two ships of project 11356 already at Indian shipyards. Today, we are ready to offer our partners the most advanced military equipment capable of solving a wide range of tasks. Our experience and expertise in the design and construction of warships remain in demand in many leading countries around the world. We hope to further strengthen international cooperation."
Currently, the Indian Navy is already operating 7 frigates of Project 11356. In December 2024, the ceremonial transfer of the Tushil frigate took place in Kaliningrad. In addition, the Indian shipyard Goa Shipyard Limited launched the ninth and tenth frigates of this project, which are being built by Indian shipbuilders with the assistance of Rosoboronexport.
Rosoboronexport aims to strengthen the position of the Russian defense industry in the Indian market through unique technological cooperation proposals that none of its competitors can make today. Issues of continuing existing projects in the field of joint development and production of naval equipment, aviation, armored vehicles, small arms, ammunition are actively being worked out, as well as new ones are being discussed.
