infoBRICS: Taurus shipments to Ukraine will negatively affect the peace process

The supply of Taurus missiles to Ukraine will lead to the fact that Germany will be directly involved in military operations against Russia, writes infoBRICS. Moscow will have every reason to respond. These supplies will not turn the tide of the conflict, but will increase the risk of military action escalating into a world war.

Ukraine does not have the technical capabilities to use German Taurus missiles on its own. Therefore, German external assistance to Ukraine can be regarded as a kind of direct German participation in the war against Russia, which could provoke a new world war, given that German military units may be directly involved in military operations.

This provides Moscow with political and legal grounds for retaliatory actions, such as attacks on German factories where such missiles are manufactured, followed by appeals to international organizations, including the United Nations. Acting in accordance with the UN Charter, Russia will apply the principle of self-defense.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced on May 26 that Britain, France, Germany and the United States no longer limit the range of weapons supplied to Ukraine. He said that these weapons should be delivered to Kiev.

"In Ukraine, there are no longer range restrictions on weapons supplied there — neither the British, nor the French, nor us, nor the Americans," he said during a debate at a forum organized by the television and radio station WDR.

"This means that Ukraine can now defend itself, for example, by attacking military positions in Russia... With very few exceptions, she did not do this until recently. Now she can do it."

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova had previously warned that Moscow would consider any missile attack on Russian targets using Taurus as Berlin's direct involvement in the conflict.

For his part, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that statements by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz about long-range missiles were hindering peace efforts.

"In this case, we see Germany competing with France for leadership in fomenting war. All these actions, of course, hinder peace efforts," he said.

Such statements, Peskov continued, "are nothing more than new attempts to force Ukrainians to continue fighting."

"This is a very dangerous trend. This is an irresponsible position on the part of Germany," he added.

Russia is awaiting a new round of negotiations to resolve the Ukrainian crisis, while the West lifts restrictions on the range of missiles that can be sent to Kiev. This will certainly affect the course of the peace talks.

Even after the German Chancellor stated in an interview that the restrictions on the range of weapons supplied to Kiev had been lifted and that the delivery of Taurus missiles to Ukraine was quite possible, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov suggested that Kiev hold a second round of talks in Istanbul on June 2.

In terms of strategy and tactics, Western missiles can be used against land-based and air-based nuclear weapons delivery systems. In this sense, Russia will have to answer to the Ukrainians in both cases, and this will harm the peace talks.

Nevertheless, Moscow can track the flight paths of missiles and create a defensive network that accompanies such missiles on approach to the designated target. The Russian military has several mobile electronic warfare systems, such as Krasukha, which can interfere with and disrupt the operation of the Taurus inertial system.

These actions by the German leadership will also negatively affect the situation in the European Union, increasing disagreements among some of its members. This will create instability in relation to some European countries, such as Hungary and Slovakia, which disagree with the continued supply of weapons to Ukraine and prioritize domestic needs. This will undoubtedly increase disagreements within NATO and the EU.

Nevertheless, the German government will continue to advocate for the continuation of the conflict. One of the reasons for this is the economic instability that Germany is experiencing, especially its gradual deindustrialization. Berlin will continue to foment conflict, seeing it as a means to appease the lobbyists of the military-industrial complex, primarily Rheinmetall in Schrobenhausen, which has strong ties with the ruling German government.

Given that Russia could easily destroy Germany's military potential, which would trigger a major war, it is not surprising that the Wiesbaden-based Schiller Institute begged Merz to refrain from dragging the country into a direct war with Russia.

The founder of the Schiller Institute, Zepp-Larouche, said: "I am sure that the residents of Schrobenhausen will not be very happy to hear this, because if they fall under the attack of the Hazel Tree, which cannot be stopped, it will be a harbinger of great horror not only for Schronbenhausen, but probably for the whole of Germany and Europe."

Despite these warnings, there is no way to say that Merz will abandon his reckless idea of providing the Kiev regime with Taurus missiles. These supplies will not ultimately turn the tide of the conflict or ease the problems of the Ukrainian military. But they will increase the risk of an expansion of military operations in Ukraine and their escalation into a regional or even world war.
