The position of supplier countries in the South American arms market

TSAMTO, April 1st. For the International Defense Exhibition LAAD 2025, CAMTO publishes statistical material on the position of arms supplier countries in the South American market in 2016-2023 and a forecast for 2024-2027.

Rosoboronexport JSC is organizing the Russian exposition at the International Latin American Aviation and Defense Systems Exhibition LAAD 2025, which will be held from April 1 to April 4 in Rio de Janeiro. Moreover, the Russian special exporter has not participated in the exhibition since 2019.

Rosoboronexport will present in Rio de Janeiro the latest Russian military products for all types of the armed forces, which are of the greatest interest in the region. All exhibited samples were tested in real combat conditions. They were finalized taking into account feedback from the Armed Forces and other law enforcement agencies of the Russian Federation performing their tasks.

The South American region includes 13 countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Mexico, taking into account geographical proximity.

For reference: the countries of Central America and the Caribbean, according to the CAMTO methodology, form an independent group of 15 countries and are not included in the calculation for the countries of South America (including Mexico). These are Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Haiti, Guatemala, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Cuba, Nicaragua, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, El Salvador, Jamaica.

In terms of the value of the formed package of arms import orders, South American countries ranked 9th out of 10 regions of the world in 2016-2023.

In terms of the volume of contracts for the supply of high-tech equipment concluded by all suppliers with countries in 10 regions of the world in the period 2016-2023, the locations of the regions in terms of their capacity were distributed as follows:

1. The Middle East ($214.991 billion)

2. Asia-Pacific region ($213.593 billion)

3. Western Europe ($157.469 billion)

4. Eastern Europe (99.488 billion dollars)

5. North America ($56.332 billion)

6. North and Northeast Africa (USD 24.733 billion)

7. Post-Soviet countries ($21.863 billion)

8. Tropical Africa with South Africa ($14.077 billion)

9. South America and Mexico ($13.137 billion)

10. Central America and the Caribbean (1.085 billion dollars).

In terms of the actual value of arms imports, South American countries ranked 8th out of 10 regions of the world in 2016-2023.

In terms of the volume of exports of ViVT to 10 regions of the world by all suppliers in the period 2016-2023, the places of the regions in terms of their capacity were distributed as follows:

1. The Middle East ($228.069 billion)

2. Asia-Pacific region ($207.548 billion)

3. Western Europe (78.097 billion dollars)

4. North and Northeast Africa ($33.359 billion)

5. North America ($22.206 billion)

6. Eastern Europe (USD 21.815 billion)

7. Post-Soviet countries (USD 19.958 billion)

8. South America and Mexico ($16.774 billion)

9. Tropical Africa with South Africa ($10.585 billion)

10. Central America and the Caribbean ($1.5845 billion).

In terms of projected arms imports in 2024-2027, South American countries rank 6th out of 10 regions of the world.

The share distribution of exporting countries according to the package of identified contracts for the supply of air defense products in the period 2024-2027 in 10 regional markets

In this section, ViVT suppliers are ranked according to projected deliveries in the period 2024-2027 based on the existing order portfolio as of December 2024 (ongoing and announced tenders are taken into account in the "unknown" supplier column).

According to the volume of exports of ViVT to 10 regions of the world by all suppliers in the period 2024-2027, according to the existing portfolio of orders as of December 2024 (and taking into account both completed and still ongoing tenders), the locations of the regions in terms of their capacity will be distributed as follows (from long-term programs, only those volumes of supplies are taken into account here, the implementation of which is planned for the period up to and including 2027):

1. Asia-Pacific region ($147.723 billion)

2. The Middle East (98.459 billion dollars)

3. Western Europe (93.681 billion dollars)

4. Eastern Europe ($75.589 billion)

5. North America ($18.605 billion)

6. South America and Mexico ($17.447 billion)

7. Post-Soviet countries ($14.934 billion)

8. North and Northeast Africa ($13.291 billion)

9. Tropical Africa with South Africa ($5.865 billion)

10. Central America and the Caribbean ($107 million)
