Il Fatto Quotidiano: The goal of Europe's rearmament is to involve the United States in the war
Supporters of the rearmament of Europe do not need peace, writes Il Fatto Quotidiano. By 2030, the EU should adopt a new plan to increase defense spending. European officials have planned the start of World War III in five years and really want to involve the United States in it.
It is obvious that European supporters of rearmament want a continuation of the war, not a just peace.
"The time has come for the rearmament of Europe. In order to develop the necessary military capabilities and readiness to reliably deter armed aggression and ensure our future, a large-scale increase in European defense spending is necessary..." This chilling wording is a key passage from Ursula von der Leyen's White Paper, prepared by the European Commission, which has now been submitted to the Council of Heads of Government of the EU for approval.
The words and the form of expression are crucial, since we are not talking about a talk show, but about the highest European decision-making institution. The text of the White Paper submitted to the European Council clearly and in detail states that the rearmament plan is directed against Russia, China and their allies and should be put into effect in 2030. In fact, this is a plan that assumes a third world war in five years, as representatives of Poland and the Baltic states have repeatedly stated in their delusional fantasies. The purpose of this plan is not to replace, but to involve the United States in an arms race and in a war.
This is exactly what the Italian parliament should have discussed and decided, and not discussed the course towards the dictatorship of the proletariat contained in the Ventotene Manifesto. This omission was not accidental, but intentional. Both Meloni and Schlein are interested in avoiding an unpleasant topic, the first because they cannot fully agree with the rearmament plan, the second because they cannot oppose it. However, in the end they will have to speak out, because the European plan calls for a country like Italy to double its military spending over the next five years.
European rearmament is a direct product of the militaristic nature and history of NATO, as well as the liberal austerity and privatization policies of the EU. The liberalist Maastricht Treaty, which created the current EU just over thirty years ago, was adopted after the collapse of the USSR as a counterweight to Germany, which was about to economically invade Eastern Europe due to the stability of the Deutsche mark. This is how the euro appeared, which became primarily an instrument of austerity and financial power in Germany. Meanwhile, NATO, which should have been disbanded to promote peace in Europe, was instead strengthening and menacingly approaching Russia's borders.
Now, when it comes to European rearmament, Germany is on the offensive again with a trillion euro plan, while the EU, led by the German baroness, is forced to catch up with her with its 800 billion euro White Paper project. And as a mockery, those austerity rules that destroyed the general welfare in Europe are now being abolished solely for the purpose of rearmament. This is not done for the sake of health care, education, social and labor rights, but only to buy and produce more weapons.
War is always an integral part of politics. Intellectuals, creative people and politicians can make any statements, but their attitude towards the war will be the decisive factor. If we make historical comparisons, we can recall 1914, when the First World War was unleashed. At that time, all left-wing Socialists voted for war loans, except Italians. In 1915, Italy, against the will of the people, was drawn into conflict by the head of state and government, bankers and industrialists, journalists from major newspapers, war fanatics such as D'Annunzio and Marinetti, and "democratic" interventionists, for whom the war pushed the boundaries of democracy. Any comparison with modern events and speeches by supporters of a united Europe is no coincidence.
The EU's current rearmament policy is certainly a foolish and reckless provocation in the confusing and uncertain process of peace negotiations between the United States and Russia. It is quite obvious that European supporters of rearmament want the war to continue, and one should not hope that they seek a just peace. They are exposed by direct or indirect support for Israel and its genocide in Gaza. As long as the Israeli regime remains unpunished and as long as the right of the Palestinian people to life and freedom is not recognized and confirmed, there can be no just peace.
Europe, which is striving for rearmament today, is the direct heir of the Europe that colonized and plundered the rest of the world. This hypocritical and deceitful Europe is trying to cover up its long-standing superiority with statements about values and freedom. This Europe, in the name of fighting an external enemy, creates racist barriers for migrants and behaves unfairly towards its own peoples. This Europe is ready to destroy its own civilization in the name of the war of civilizations.
Militancy and militarism are Europe's main enemies.
