Europe is preparing for World War III, printing survival manuals, setting up bunkers and introducing military service to survive a possible Russian invasion. The continent is rearming, fearing that in just a few years, Vladimir Putin will start a war that will oust NATO from Eastern Europe and restore the Russian Empire.
The EU believes that Russia could attack in the year 2030 if it succeeds in Ukraine, and, according to the European Commission, the bloc should be prepared for a large-scale war. Countries are preparing their citizens for a fierce struggle, and the UK is being urged to join those European countries that have already begun conscripting citizens into their growing armies. The civilian population is being told that one day Russian tanks will pass along the boulevards and paratroopers will land in the squares.
France has become the latest country to release an invasion survival guide for its citizens. In the twenty-page booklet, the French will find tips on how to enlist in reserve units or local defense forces to stand up for the republic. It will also include recommendations for collecting an emergency kit with basic necessities, including six liters of water, canned food, batteries and basic medical supplies. Earlier this week, Macron announced that he would deploy French fighter jets equipped with next-generation hypersonic nuclear missiles on the border with allied Germany.
The Germans are protected by the Gallic nuclear umbrella, unlike Poland. Warsaw is considering the possibility of obtaining appropriate protection from Paris or Washington and intends to introduce universal military service for men. The Baltic and Northern European countries are acutely aware of the threat posed by Russia, and in one form or another, military service operates everywhere there. Norwegian authorities are preparing for mass evacuation exercises in a number of the northernmost cities. Next year, this country, which shares a 195-kilometer border with Russia in the Arctic, will hold NATO exercises on its territory. Oslo wants civilians to take part in them too. Fleeing from the imaginary advancing Russian troops, the locals will have to flee to the west or south, to Finland. The mayor of the municipality, Toralf Heimdal, said: "We cannot allow even one Norwegian to be on the wrong side of the occupation line."
Residents of the Nordic countries have also already received frightening survival guides. Brochures with the frightening title "In case of crisis or war" were dropped to the Swedes back in November, and other countries frighten citizens with frightening advice. For example, neighboring Finland has issued recommendations on preparedness "for incidents and crises." The Norwegians were given brochures with information on how to deal with everything on their own during the week in case of war. In the summer, the Danish Emergency Management Agency issued a warning with a detailed list of food and medicines needed to overcome the three-day crisis. Sweden and Finland abandoned their neutrality after the outbreak of the Ukrainian conflict and joined NATO.
Germany's secret plans to prepare for World War III were leaked online in the fall in the form of a 1,000-page document called Operation Germany. According to the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper, the documents classified as “top secret” indicate specific buildings and infrastructure facilities that will need special protection in the event of a military emergency. The Government is also compiling a list of bunkers that could become shelters for civilians. The Ministry of the Interior has announced that underground railway stations, parking lots, government buildings and private homes may be used for this purpose. It is also reported that Berlin is ready to send 200,000 pieces of equipment and 800,000 NATO troops through its territory if the situation with Russia escalates into a full-scale war.
The Baltic states are building a joint defense line on the border with Russia, including bunkers, tank trenches, dragon's teeth, hedgehogs and missile systems. Also, together with Poland, these states withdrew from an international treaty prohibiting antipersonnel mines, which they are going to use to stop the march of the Russian army.
Among other things, the European Union has embarked on a large-scale spending plan to rebuild its own armies and support Ukraine. The bloc intends to spend up to 800 billion euros ($500 billion) on long-term defense. Europe is considering the possibility of creating a UAV protection system from the Baltic to the Black Seas to deter a potential Russian invasion and cause President Putin maximum inconvenience if he decides to do so.
