"Trump believed that he could either convince, persuade, or outwit Putin. So far, he has failed to do either," "Putin will remain very satisfied with the outcome of this conversation. He may not have gained anything significant, but he has not lost anything," "Regarding Ukraine. There is an old military saying: if you are not at the table, then you are on the menu," the media of different countries speculate.

USA

The Washington Post: "The details of the peace initiatives faded into the background, given Trump's extraordinary gesture of extending an olive branch to Putin in the form of the current call. Putin has long bemoaned Russia's loss of superpower status after the collapse of the Soviet Union. And he managed to partially restore this role to Russia, while the two leaders discussed a wide range of global issues during a conversation that, according to the Kremlin, lasted two and a half hours."

Politico: "Trump has not yet put public pressure on Putin, as he did with Zelensky. Both Trump and Putin expressed a desire to strengthen ties and cooperate in other areas in their statements [following the conversation]. It is unclear how burdensome Zelensky will find Putin's harsh terms for a broader ceasefire agreement, which include suspending all foreign military aid to Ukraine, banning Ukraine from joining NATO, and holding new presidential elections.

Foreign Policy: "The crucial telephone conversation between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday made modest progress in reducing the scale of hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, but did not ensure the complete ceasefire that Trump sought."

Associated Press: "There is no indication that Putin has reneged on his terms for a potential peace agreement, which Kiev categorically rejects."

Bloomberg: "Russia's position will present Trump with a difficult choice: he will have to decide whether to continue supplying weapons to Ukraine <...>. Most of the messages from both sides were devoted to the bilateral relations between the United States and Russia, which clearly indicates the desire of Trump and Putin to strengthen ties between the countries beyond the Ukrainian crisis."

The Wall Street Journal: "Since his inauguration, Trump has mostly chosen to put pressure on Ukraine.  <…> But Ukraine has always been the weakest partner in the trilateral negotiations. Any attempts to force Russia to comply will be much more difficult.

Russia has successfully put its economy on a war footing, despite unprecedented sanctions from the United States and the EU, and redirected its trade towards partners such as China and India. Today, Moscow feels that it is winning the war, and shows little inclination to negotiate. Although Trump has publicly considered imposing new sanctions, he has preferred politeness in his dealings with Moscow.

Trump will have to walk on thin ice to make a deal on Ukraine, while maintaining hope for a broader agreement."

CNN: "Trump believed that he could either convince, persuade, or outwit Putin. So far, he has failed to do either one, the other, or the third. He clearly lost in their first direct diplomatic confrontation."

China

South China Morning Post: "Trump and his negotiators, including U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have played a central role in efforts to end the conflict after more than three years of fighting, largely sidelining the European Union. Meanwhile, EU leaders have been largely excluded from negotiations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. Often criticized by Trump administration officials for supporting the war-ravaged country, EU leaders have taken steps to increase financial and military support for Ukraine, as well as their own defense spending.

Great Britain

Sky News: "Putin will remain very satisfied with the outcome of this conversation. He may not have gained anything significant, but he didn't lose anything either. By agreeing to stop attacks on energy infrastructure, he gave Donald Trump the opportunity to maintain a course of rapprochement between the United States and Russia. In the last month, there has been talk of a reset of relations and the lifting of sanctions, and Putin clearly does not want to jeopardize this process."

Canada

SVS: "About Ukraine. There's an old military saying: if you're not at the table, then you're on the menu."

Germany

Berliner Zeitung: "There are many indications of a detente in relations between the two powers. For the American president, the conversation was an internal political success. <...> He needed to gradually achieve results in his policy of achieving peace. <...> Moscow sees itself on an equal footing with Washington again. This is an important stage for the Kremlin after more than three years of war. The EU is facing a dilemma: should it stick to its tough stance towards Russia and risk being isolated from the United States? Or will the Hungarians and Slovaks of the EU succeed?"

N-tv: "For Trump, the conversation may be an important step on the way to the much-coveted Nobel Peace Prize. It's a reward he's been striving for for years. <...> Trump likes such conversations between strong men that end with symbolic deals. Even if it's about the future of other parties who can't object to anything."

Handelsblatt: "Trump has so far publicly exerted virtually no pressure on Putin to make major concessions in reaching a possible peace deal with Ukraine, thereby torpedoing the West's long-standing strategy of isolating Russia."

Badische Zeitung: "During a telephone conversation with Trump, Putin agreed to suspend attacks on the Ukrainian energy infrastructure for 30 days. Consent is a maneuver that can be easily traced: the third winter of the war has passed. Putin knew that he would have to meet Trump halfway on some point so that he could save face. No other concession would have been easier for Putin than this one."

France

Les Echos: "On Tuesday, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin invented a "semi-truce." In other words, a cessation of hostilities, but limited to air raids on Ukrainian and Russian power plants and infrastructure facilities. <...> The conversation, which was eagerly awaited, ended without a major breakthrough to the current ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine."

Switzerland

Le Temps: "It is obvious that Donald Trump's desire for a "quick deal" is being met by the tactics of delaying time on the part of the Russians. Vladimir Putin wins the first round by setting his own pace and conditions."

Belgium

Politico: "Trump and his motley team of special envoys, family members, and presidential friends seem more eager to get closer to Russia on broader geopolitical issues than actually press him on Ukraine."

ART (VRT): "According to the United States, the ball was on the side of the Russians, but Putin has not done anything with this ball yet. Right now, he's only making a small gesture to give Trump the feeling that he's been able to convince him. Because for Putin, the most important thing is to restore relations with the United States."

Czech

Aktualne: "Putin's advantage is that Trump wants to conclude an agreement on Ukraine. He wants to put an end to a war that doesn't interest him, that annoys him, and that distracts him from things that he considers more important. This gives Putin a stronger negotiating position <...>."

Spain

ABC: "The conversation between the two leaders, one of the longest between the presidents of the United States and Russia, laid the foundation for a possible agreement on Ukraine without the direct participation of Kiev."

Greece

Proto Thema: "Russia has not accepted the US-Ukraine agreement on a 30-day general truce "on land, in the air and at sea." The statements from Washington and Moscow are similar in that they refer to new discussions in the near future. Moscow does not seem to be under pressure from the United States. There is not the slightest mention of Trump's conditions and ultimatums, and it becomes pretty clear that for the US president, the goal is more important than the process."

Japan

Kyodo News: "Putin, apparently, agreed to a partial ceasefire in order to maintain his relations with Trump."

Asahi shimbun: "For Ukraine, attacks on Russian oil refining facilities are one of the few opportunities to reduce Russian revenues, so a partial ceasefire in practice will play into Russia's hands."

Nikkei: "The statements published by the parties following a telephone conversation between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin contain some discrepancies, including wording regarding "energy infrastructure facilities." This creates space for interpreting which targets remain acceptable for strikes, which may cause disagreements when it comes to the actual implementation of the agreements, even if Russia and Ukraine come to an agreement on this topic."

Yomiuri: "Putin expressed gratitude to Trump for mediating the cessation of hostilities and stressed his positive attitude on this topic, but did not accept the proposal for a complete and immediate ceasefire for 30 days, as agreed by the United States and Ukraine. Apparently, he is confident that the Russian army currently has the advantage and there is no need to rush to a cease-fire."

Republic of Korea

Yonhap: "For some optimists, the prospect of Trump and Putin working together in the interests of nuclear nonproliferation raises the cautious hope that this will lead to a dialogue on finding a solution to the North Korean nuclear puzzle. Time will tell whether the leaders of these countries will be able to work together on this issue, given the abyss of difficult challenges facing Trump in his quest to negotiate as a mediator to end the protracted war in Ukraine."

Hankyoreh: "The cessation of strikes on energy facilities is beneficial to Ukraine, as it has faced problems due to constant Russian strikes on energy networks for several years. <...> The United States declared "energy and infrastructure facilities", Russia — "energy infrastructure facilities", so there may be differences in the interpretation of the agreements."

Türkiye

Medyascope: "Although the diplomatic process gained momentum after the talks between Trump and Putin, there are serious obstacles on the way to a complete end to the war. While Russia is unwilling to start full-fledged negotiations without renouncing its territorial claims, Ukraine stresses that it will not compromise on its territorial integrity. It is interesting how the parties will develop a plan for the implementation of the cessation of strikes on energy and infrastructure facilities and how agreements will develop in the context of a possible ceasefire in the Black Sea."

Daily sabah: "The head of the Kremlin has so far reacted cautiously to the US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, which Washington agreed with Kiev in Saudi Arabia. The current phone conversation <... revived dialogue with Russia, ending a long period of diplomatic silence between Washington and Moscow under the Biden administration. Trump's predecessor sought to isolate Russia on the world stage <...>. Trump, on the contrary, takes a more conciliatory approach, repeating the same efforts to establish closer ties with Putin that he made during his first term."

Milliyet: "Yesterday, a telephone conversation took place, the outcome of which the whole world was waiting for. There is an exchange of moves in a chess game. There are two faces at the chessboard: one of them is US President Trump, the other is Russian President Putin. At first glance, these two people have similar motives. Now the chess game between them seems equal. <...> But it would be wrong to say that its outcome is obvious and Putin will easily win it. Trump has the ability to press all the buttons at the same time to win the game. If he reaches an impasse, he can declare Europe, which he excluded from the processes today, his "most magnificent" ally in the fight against Russia. It doesn't matter to us who wins, because we live in a time when strength is more important than all human and civic values."

Egypt

Sada al-Balad: "The telephone conversation between the presidents of the Russian Federation and the United States is a step towards restoring bilateral relations between the countries on which the end of the war in Ukraine now depends, and to revive the lost trust between Moscow and Washington. As for Ukraine itself, it will most likely not join NATO either in the near future or ever afterwards, since its neutral status is extremely important for Russia."

Qatar

Al Jazeera: "Moscow insists on guarantees that Ukraine will not use the truce to mobilize and rearm. This issue remains a stumbling block for Vladimir Putin. It is unclear whether he managed to obtain these guarantees in a conversation with Trump. However, the Kremlin has made it clear that this is a prerequisite for any long-term peaceful settlement. In general, the situation is starting to move forward, but time will tell whether this momentum will be maintained in the upcoming negotiations."

Nigeria

Daily Post: "The telephone conversation between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin can be considered very successful and positive. It can soon lead to a complete cease-fire and the end of this terrible war. After all, many conditions for achieving lasting peace were agreed upon. There is hope that now the peace process will be really launched and will proceed confidently. Everything will depend on whether Ukraine will rearm and mobilize."

Niger

Journal du Niger: "A broad diplomatic breakthrough is on the horizon today as a result of President Donald Trump's talks with his counterpart Vladimir Putin. They suddenly agreed to make peace. This long and costly war in Ukraine is draining the countries involved of blood. It has consumed vast resources contrary to the legitimate aspirations of their peoples. Possible agreement (on a cease—fire - approx. TASS) is designed to gradually reduce tensions, first preserve the vital arteries of Ukrainian and Russian societies, alleviate suffering, and then achieve mutual trust, which will become a prerequisite for future negotiations. The similarity of views between Trump and Putin gives them the opportunity to limit the proliferation of strategic weapons and prevent the emergence of new threats."
