The inter-network repeater ensures the transmission of encrypted messages on the battlefield

An inter-network relay device "Metaphor" was tested in the area of the special operation. It can be connected to various directly incompatible devices — a mobile phone, military or civilian radio stations, or an Internet tablet — and transmit speech or information messages in encrypted form between them. Experts note that the new product solves one of the most important problems — the compatibility of different types of communication systems in combat conditions.

The possibilities of "Metaphor"

The "metaphor" helps to ensure the transmission of speech or messages between cell phones, radio stations, computers and tablets connected to various networks. The device receives a signal from external networks in several ways. The USB connector allows you to connect a modem with a SIM card and use a cellular network as a communication channel. A special connector allows you to work with the wired Internet. It is also possible to receive the Internet using Wi-Fi.

Two standard mini XLR connectors allow you to connect various types of both military and civilian radios to the device.

— Metaphor solves the problems of compatibility of various radio stations, secure speech transmission, as well as combining them into a single system via broadband networks and the Internet. The process of building a communication network from existing various devices is very complicated, and sometimes impossible, when some of them are incompatible with each other. Metaphor provides a simple solution to this problem," Andrey Stepanov, director of the developer company Smart Technologies LLC, told Izvestia. This Penza-based company has implemented a project to develop Metaphora with the support of the Center for Unmanned Systems and Technologies (CBST).

For example, "Metaphor" allows you to combine any civilian and military radio station "Azart" into one network connected to it.

It is also important that the inter-network repeater transmits speech, address and group text messages in encrypted form. The "Metaphor" uses the same cryptographic protocol that is used to protect data on the Internet.

— Information security experts claim that it will take years to crack such a protocol on powerful modern personal computers, — explained Andrey Stepanov. — In addition, even in open mode, it is possible to build a secure network — radio stations encrypt the signal on their own.

The EW does not affect the "Metaphor", since it is not a receiving and transmitting device.

"For example, the radio stations themselves that transmit the signal are affected by electronic warfare," Andrei Stepanov explained. — Due to the fact that the "Metaphor" provides a wide range of connection and switching methods, it is possible to build different variations of communication schemes that are most suitable for specific conditions and limitations.

The device is configured using a mobile application — the smartphone controls the "Metaphor" via Bluetooth.

The repeater itself weighs 240 grams, of which 150 is accounted for by the battery.

— The weight and size of the device make it easy to carry it with you, — said Andrey Stepanov.

The developers said that the impact resistance of the product meets the standards for civilian gadgets. To increase the reliability of use in extreme conditions, additional protective covers or impact-resistant compartments should be used.

The Metaphor underwent four phases of testing: laboratory, urban, rough terrain, and combat conditions.

— The fourth phase of the tests took place in the SVO zone with the participation of fighters, — said Andrey Stepanov. — They highly appreciated the device, the first impression of it was extremely positive. There were constructive suggestions and advice from the fighters on the convenience of use and on the modes of operation. We have created a chat for discussions and suggestions. We are working together to improve the product.

Communication problems in the military

As military expert Vadim Kozyulin explained to Izvestia, different law enforcement agencies and structures, in particular the Interior Ministry, the Russian Armed Forces and the Russian Guard, have different communication systems.

"The problem of communication between them has been around since the Chechen War," he said. — If the device was made by representatives of the so-called national defense industrial complex (MIC) and meets the stated characteristics, then this is another confirmation of the now quite popular idea that our defense industry, where amateurs and enthusiasts work, has reached such a technical level during the conflict that it can compete with Western high-budget corporations. Today, such rivalry is observed, and in some cases our team shows itself very well.

The main communicator in the CBO zone, through which information is transmitted and interaction takes place, is radio communication, military expert Alexei Leonkov told Izvestia.

— As soon as such automation appears through communication systems, many tasks begin to be solved easier, he noted.

New items in the free zone

The units operating in the SVO zone began to supply upgraded tactical headsets that protect hearing and ensure reliable communication. Earlier, Izvestia wrote that the new product is compatible with any radio stations and protective helmets, which makes it universal.

The Echo Pro active noise-canceling headset includes headphones with a rigid headband, helmet rail mounts, a removable microphone, a cord for connecting to a PTT device (a chest switch connected to radio stations) and fasteners.

In addition to the classic hard headband, there are helmet rail mounts included. The fastening system provides an individual fit according to the personal needs of the fighter — this ensures comfort during operation of the product. The headset works for up to 200 hours on two AAA batteries.
