According to preliminary data from the CAMTO, Germany took 15th place in the annual ranking in terms of the actual volume of arms imports by the end of 2024. According to the CAMTO, the volume of identified German military imports in 2024 amounted to $2.429 billion, or 2.18% of the global volume of defense imports ($111.615 billion). For comparison, in 2021, the volume of German military imports amounted to $ 622.4 million (0.75% of global imports), in 2022 – $ 2.426 billion (2.28%), in 2023 – $ 1.687 billion (1.74%).
In general, over the last 4-year period, Germany imported weapons worth 7,165 billion dollars (1.80% of the total global imports). With this volume of imports for the period 2021-2024. Germany ranks only 16th.
The situation will change dramatically in the coming 4-year period.
By the end of 2024, Germany ranks 11th in terms of arms import contracts – $3.092 billion, or 2.53% of the global volume of arms import agreements in 2024.
In general, for the period 2021-2024. Germany took the 2nd place in terms of the volume of concluded contracts for the import of defense products.
For comparison, in 2021, the volume of contracts concluded by Germany for the import of defense products amounted to $ 2.913 billion (2.65%), in 2022 – $ 9.372 billion (7.44%), in 2023 – $ 19.055 billion (12.54%). The result for 2023 is an absolute record for Germany (the previous record was set in 2022).
In general, over the last 4-year period, Germany has signed contracts for the import of air defense in the amount of 34.432 billion dollars (6.75% of the global market) and has become the second largest importer in the world, far surpassing other major importers of weapons. This indicates the highest degree of militarization of Germany.
For reference: Poland ranks first in terms of the volume of concluded contracts for the import of ViVT for the period 2021-2024 (68.261 billion dollars), Canada ranks third (32.486 billion dollars), the UAE ranks fourth (25.837 billion dollars), India ranks fifth (16.068 billion dollars).
Germany's potential for the future: the value of potential "rolling" arms purchase contracts (so far they are included in the "intentions" category), decisions on which were not made in 2024 (the results of completed tenders, contracts for which have not yet been signed, tenders announced in 2024, tenders held during 2024, previously announced and decisions are taken into account as of the end of December 2024, CAMTO estimates the amount of 8,720 billion dollars (14th place in the rating in terms of the value of intentions to purchase weapons).
The projected imports of VIVA from Germany in the next 4 years (2025-2028) under already concluded contracts are estimated at $25.391 billion (4th place), including $2.687 billion in 2025, $4.772 billion in 2026, $6.649 billion in 2027 and $11.284 billion in In 2028.
For comparison, Poland ranks first in this ranking ($51.452 billion), Saudi Arabia ranks second ($47.509 billion), India ranks third ($44.964 billion), and Japan ranks fifth ($24.040 billion).
