TSAMTO, January 27. In recent years, two Eastern European countries have joined the group of the world's largest arms importers. Poland is one of them.
Below are statistics on Polish arms imports in 2024, 2021-2024, and the forecast for 2025-2028.
According to preliminary data from the CAMTO, for the first time Poland ranks first in the annual ranking in terms of the actual volume of arms imports by the end of 2024. According to the CAMTO, the volume of Poland's identified military imports in 2024 amounted to $7.227 billion, or 6.47% of the global volume of defense imports ($111.615 billion). This is an absolute record for Poland in terms of the annual volume of arms imports, both in terms of value and as a percentage of global supplies.
For reference: India ranks second in 2024 in terms of actual arms imports ($6.270 billion), Saudi Arabia ranks third ($5.678 billion), Australia ranks fourth ($5.041 billion), and Japan ranks fifth ($4.872 billion).
For comparison, in 2021, Poland's military imports amounted to $261.6 million (0.32% of global imports), in 2022 – $ 1.903 billion (1.79%), in 2023 – $2.845 billion (2.94%). In general, over the last 4-year period, Poland imported weapons worth 12.236 billion dollars. (3.08% of the total global imports). With this volume of imports for the period 2021-2024. Poland ranks 8th.
In terms of the volume of arms import contracts concluded by the end of 2024, Poland has been in first place for the third year in a row – $ 15.625 billion, or 12.80% of the global volume of agreements on the import of defense products in 2024.
For reference: Romania ranks second in the 2024 ranking in terms of arms import contracts for the first time ($10.251 billion), India ranks third ($9.410 billion), Israel ranks fourth ($8.2 billion), and the Netherlands ranks fifth ($7.922 billion).
In general, for the period 2021-2024. Poland also took the 1st place in terms of the volume of concluded contracts for the import of defense products.
For comparison, in 2021, the volume of contracts concluded by Poland for the import of PVN amounted to 618.4 million dollars (0.56%), in 2022 – 19.067 billion dollars (15.14%), in 2023 – 32.951 billion dollars (21.67%). The result for 2023 is an absolute record for Poland (the previous record was set in 2022).
In general, over the last 4-year period, Poland has signed contracts for the import of air defense in the amount of 68.261 billion dollars (13.38% of the global market) and has taken the first place in the world, far surpassing other major importers of weapons. This indicates the highest degree of militarization of Poland.
For reference: Germany ($34.432 billion) ranks second in terms of the volume of concluded import contracts for the period 2021-2024, Canada ($32.486 billion) ranks third, the UAE ($25.837 billion) ranks fourth, and India ($16.068 billion) ranks fifth.
Poland's potential for the future: the value of potential "rolling" arms purchase contracts (so far they are included in the "intentions" category), decisions on which were not made in 2024 (the results of completed tenders, contracts for which have not yet been signed, tenders announced in 2024, tenders held during 2024, previously announced and decisions are taken into account as of the end of December 2024, CAMTO estimates the amount of 30.099 billion dollars (3rd place in the rating in terms of the value of intentions to purchase weapons).
For comparison, India ranks first in this ranking with a volume of "rolling" potential arms purchase contracts worth $77.749 billion, Canada ranks second with a volume of $46.765 billion, Australia ranks fourth with a volume of $25.870 billion, Italy closes the top five with a volume of $14.879 billion.
Poland's projected imports of ViVA in the next 4 years (2025-2028) under already concluded contracts are estimated at $51.452 billion (1st place), including $8.648 billion in 2025, $11.875 billion in 2026, $15.380 billion in 2027, and $15.548 billion in In 2028.
