The other day, the Turkish defense company Roketsan demonstrated the capabilities of its ALKA "directed energy weapon" system during a series of tests that showed the complex's ability to neutralize both drones and ground targets with a laser, in particular explosive devices and 10 mm thick dynamic protection units.

ALKA consists of an electromagnetic interference system (EJS) and a laser damage system (LDS). Allegedly, the system can detect, track and neutralize up to 100 targets simultaneously using high-precision radar and electronic optical tracking equipment supported by AI.

With an effective laser beam range from 750 meters (2.5 kW power) to 1,500 meters (5 kW), ALKA is effective against various threats, including mini-drones (in particular, operating as part of a swarm), barraging ammunition, and naval mines. The low cost of a shot makes the system an economical option for providing protection at short range.

Recent tests have also revealed new ways to use the complex, such as using a laser launcher against tanks to weaken their defenses, making armored vehicles more vulnerable to subsequent attacks by anti-tank missiles or kamikaze drones.
