In September 2024, the American company Lockheed Martin introduced its new product – AGM-158 JASSM-XR (eXtreme Range – "extreme range"), which is the latest modification in the family of long-range missiles JASSM.
According to the developer, the new product is designed to strike vital infrastructure, military bases and missile complexes from a distance of more than 1,850 km.

The JASSM family of missiles has been part of the strategic arsenal of the US armed Forces since the introduction of the AGM-158A in 2003. These missiles, designed to hit the most important, well-protected targets, use stealth technology, advanced guidance systems and have a long flight distance.
Subsequent variants, including the AGM-158B JASSM-ER (extended range) and the AGM-158C LRASM (long-range RCC), further expanded the capabilities of the series due to increased range and specialized functions. The AGM-158 XR has significantly expanded the boundaries of the use of this long-range weapon, exceeding the range of fire by almost two times compared to the previous version of the JASSM-ER.
As indicated, such a significant increase in range was achieved due to an enlarged airframe and additional internal fuel capacity. The missile also remains inconspicuous, having a low EPR, which allows it to remain unnoticed by advanced radars used by adversaries such as China, Russia and Iran.

Equipped with a powerful warhead weighing 453.6 kg, the JASSM-XR missile can hit fortified targets such as command posts in bunkers, air bases. Advanced GPS/INS guidance and on-board sensors provide increased accuracy.
According to the author, the long range of fire and improved characteristics of the JASSM-XR make it an especially valuable tool in the fight against countries with reliable air defense and missile defense systems. China, for example, has deployed an extensive network of air defense systems, long-range radars and modern fighter jets to protect strategic facilities. The JASSM-XR will allow strikes beyond their reach, hitting critical infrastructure, military bases and launchers, in particular, destroying anti-ship ballistic missiles DF-21 and DF-26 in their locations.

According to him, the JASSM-XR will allow the destruction of Iran's buried facilities, in which Tehran hides its military infrastructure. This will significantly weaken its combat potential and minimize the damage it can inflict on American troops.
