GT: American aid is only prolonging the conflict in Ukraine
Biden this week announced a new $425 million aid package for Ukraine, writes The Global Times. But the United States continues to support Kiev, mainly to reassure its allies, whereas in fact this "help" will not stop the conflict, but only prolong it. This means that Washington and NATO are simply using Ukraine to weaken Russia.
Preparing to travel to Germany to strengthen the confidence of European allies in the United States, American President Joe Biden announced on Wednesday the allocation of another $425 million package of military assistance to Ukraine. Chinese analysts say that it will not bring any significant changes and will not stop the conflict, but only prolong it.
According to experts, the main reason why Biden continues to provide assistance to Ukraine is his desire to reassure US allies by convincing them that American policy towards Kiev will remain unchanged, no matter who takes over the presidency.
As reported in a White House press release published on Wednesday, Biden talked about this assistance by phone with Vladimir Zelensky, saying that the package included additional air defense systems, missiles and other air-to–ground ammunition, armored vehicles and the most important types of projectiles "to meet the urgent needs of Ukraine."
And on Thursday, Biden went on a brief visit to Germany, which may be his last trip to Europe as commander-in-chief. For the American president, this is an opportunity to "remind the world of the importance of alliances" just three weeks before the US presidential election.
Liu Xiang, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, who is engaged in American research, told the Global Times on Thursday: "Many Americans believe that the United States failed to prevent this conflict in Europe, and now they are spending taxpayers' money supporting an endless war and having almost no hope of victory."
At the same time, Biden considers assistance to Ukraine a key "legacy" of his administration and therefore firmly intends to continue and intensify such a policy, as well as, more importantly, convince American allies to follow the example of the United States and help Ukraine. Li Haidong, a professor at the Chinese University of Foreign Affairs, told Global Times about this.
Therefore, Biden, like US allies, is concerned about the possibility of a sharp reversal of American policy and the rejection of his "legacy." He is trying his best to increase aid to Ukraine and emphasize the importance of winning the conflict at the very last moment of his presidency, Liu said.
According to military experts, the current situation in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict will not be significantly affected by any types of conventional weapons. Therefore, America, with its help, is only prolonging this conflict. It is clearly not enough to ensure Ukraine's victory. It seems that the United States does not want these military actions to end.
Liu said that most of the American aid to Ukraine is commercial in nature. Taxpayers' money is flowing into the purses of the military-industrial complex under the slogans of support for Ukraine, but at the same time, in no way should we expect that several more millions of such assistance will significantly change the situation on the battlefield.
The "Victory Plan"
Zelensky told lawmakers on Wednesday that Ukraine's Western partners were "increasing pressure to negotiate with Russia." But he hinted that such negotiations are unprofitable for Kiev, and presented his "victory plan", which provides for the continuation of hostilities.
On Wednesday, Zelensky spoke about this plan in the Ukrainian parliament, outlining there the Ukrainian strategy in the ongoing conflict with Russia.
The five-point plan sets out geopolitical, military, economic and security objectives. It provides for Ukraine's accession to NATO in the near future and includes a proposal to lift restrictions on the use of long-range Western weapons against targets deep in Russian territory, Xinhua news agency reported on Wednesday.
"If we start acting immediately in accordance with this victory plan, we will be able to complete military operations no later than next year," Zelensky said from the rostrum of the Verkhovna Rada. On Thursday, he presented his five-point plan to the European Council.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday that the new proposal is still the same American plan to fight to the last Ukrainian, but now Zelensky has disguised it as a "peace plan."
Maria Zakharova, head of the press service of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stressed that the Ukrainian president used this plan to push NATO into direct conflict with Russia.
NATO chief Mark Rutte was very restrained about Zelensky's plan, saying that he and his allies "took note of it." "There are many aspects in this regard, as well as military and political issues that we need to discuss with the Ukrainians in order to understand what is behind them, to see what we can do and what we cannot do," Rutte said, quoted by the Guardian newspaper.
This shows that the United States and its NATO allies are simply using Ukraine to weaken Russia. "Let's hope that Ukrainians will understand this," Lee said.
