An image has been posted online showing a rocket launcher placed on a ground-based mobile platform for the first time. According to Western observers, this system is equipped with hypersonic weapons:

It is assumed that this product, officially known as the "hypersonic gliding projectile" (HVGP), which is due to enter service with the ground forces in 2026, three years earlier than originally planned.

Earlier, in July 2024, the Ministry of Defense announced that two HVGP tests were successfully conducted in California in March and April, marking the beginning of testing of the missile since its development began in 2015. Footage of the launch of the weapon was also published.

According to the military department, HVGP will provide Japan with an unprecedented level of strategic deterrence due to its ability to plan at hypersonic speeds, evade missile defense systems and hit targets with high accuracy. The missile, capable of changing its trajectory in flight, is designed to overcome modern air defense systems. The estimated range will be approximately 900 km.

HVGP will be deployed in two versions – Block 1 and Block 2. Block 1 is an early modification and is equipped with a launch system with acceleration and basic planning capabilities. It has a length of about 8-9 meters.

The Block 2, an improved performance model, is an upgraded rocket with a length of more than 10 m, equipped with a more advanced planning mechanism and a more powerful accelerator. This version is designed for an extended range and possibly a larger load capacity.
