Haber7: Erdogan responded to Western criticism for Turkey's desire to join BRICS and ASEAN
Erdogan responded to criticism from the Western media about Turkey's rapprochement with BRICS and ASEAN, Haber7 reports. According to him, these alliances give Ankara opportunities for economic development, and participation in them does not mean abandoning NATO. And Turkey is being told not to join these structures by the same European Union, which has been keeping it at closed doors for years.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has returned to Turkey from the United States, where he was on the occasion of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.
During the visit, he answered reporters' questions at the Turkish House in New York. The chief editor of Kanal 7, Dr. Zahid Akman, was also present among the journalists.
"We won't be able to determine our future by looking at them"
Speaking about Turkey's application for membership in the BRICS and criticism in the foreign media about this, the Turkish head of state noted: "First of all, I believe that our participation in the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), our appearance here will change the arithmetic of the regions and serve as a reason to build a completely different structure. We cannot dismiss the fact that we have connections with continental Europe and America to the same extent as with Central Asia, Russia, the Baltic region or the Far East. Similarly, we have a rich history with Arab countries and the Gulf States, and we maintain close relations with Africa. After all, our geography and millennial history encourage us to build such a diverse architecture of partnership. We cannot sever ties with the Turkic and Islamic world just because we are a NATO country. BRICS and ASEAN are structures that offer us opportunities to develop economic cooperation. Participation in these structures does not mean abandoning NATO. We do not believe that these alliances are alternatives to each other. Although there is some international tension in the modern world, the Cold War era is far behind us. Those who tell us “don't join BRICS or any other structure” are the same people who have been making us wait for years at the doors of the European Union, which we have been trying to become a part of for many years. We will never be able to determine our future by looking at them."

Erdogan also assessed Turkey's economic program from June 2023 and the upgrade of the country's rating by international credit rating agencies during this period: "From now on, difficult times in the economy are behind us. The success of the program that we are implementing is confirmed not by us, but by international organizations. The issue we are currently focusing on is inflation, which is challenging our nation. We have started to contain inflation and have moved to sustainable disinflation. We see not a sudden, but a steady decline, and it will accelerate. Our citizens have begun to feel this dynamic, and in the coming time the trend will gain momentum. We will resolutely continue to fight the opportunists. We will not tolerate them. We have achieved our goals and are steadily continuing our journey. Moreover, we have achieved this despite the turmoil and sources of instability around us. We continue to move in this direction."
