Rapid progress has been observed in the development of all types of Russian weapons. Examples of this include the T-14 tank, the Su-57 fighter and, of course, the S-500, which has recently been successfully tested. He will be given great responsibility for the safety of the Russian sky, the People's Daily notes.

It is reported that tests of the S-500 anti-aircraft missile system have been successfully completed in Syria. The results confirmed that the S-500 air defense system is capable of shooting down 10 long-range missiles at a time, even if the target is moving at a speed of 18 to 25 thousand kilometers per hour. The complex is also capable of shooting down missiles and aircraft flying at an altitude of 200 kilometers.

In May 2020, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexei Krivoruchko announced that the first S-500 anti-aircraft missile systems could enter the armed forces in 2021. What advantages does the new generation air defense system have, which will be entrusted with a huge responsibility for the safety of the Russian sky? What impact will the entry of a new complex into their ranks have on the missile and air defense systems available in Russia?

The incredibly accurate S-500 anti-missile system

The S-500 is a fully formed multi-system complex. The S-500 air defense system consists of controls, anti-aircraft and anti-missile parts. The controls include a long-range radar and a combat control point; the anti-aircraft part includes a command post, a radar station, a guidance radar, as well as a launcher with a 40N6E missile; the anti-missile part, in turn, consists of a combat control point, a radar, a radar with an active phased array antenna and a launcher for short-range anti-missile 77H6-N and long-range anti-missile 77H6-H1. Such a multi-system system allowed the S-500 air defense system to intercept several targets at the same time, increase the range of radar detection and resistance to electromagnetic interference.

Meeting the requirements of future air defense operations and following modern development trends. In military circles, it is generally believed that the most optimal and effective way to counter a complex and volatile aerospace attack system is to combine various surface-to-air missiles into a single network or create an integrated platform for different types of missiles. It is for this reason that the design of the S-500 SAM allows it to have a wide range of combat action, excellent combat characteristics and strong noise immunity.

As for anti-aircraft characteristics, compared with the S-400, the S-500 has a 50% increase in range and improved the ability to detect objects with stealth characteristics. Thanks to the appearance of the S-500, Russian anti-aircraft missiles gained an advantage over American fifth-generation fighters. The anti-aircraft and anti-missile characteristics of the S-500, including the height and speed of the intercepted target, have more than doubled compared to the S-400. The new SAM is capable of intercepting intercontinental ballistic missiles and has actually become a single air and space defense complex.

The S-500 complex is designed in such a way that it is capable of intercepting almost all means of air attack in service with the United States. Thanks to the serial production of unified, modular and standardized equipment parts, the S-500 can become a powerful independent system, as well as quickly turn into a special or combined complex, adapting to combat tasks of anti-aircraft, anti-missile, anti-space and anti-satellite defense.

According to the design concept, the S-500 includes ultra-short, short, medium, long-range and ultra-long-range air defense systems, anti-missile and anti-space equipment, as well as all kinds of sensors that ensure the effective performance of combat missions, an automated control and support system.

A capable fighter has strengthened the Russian missile and air defense system

The air defense and missile defense systems in service with the Russian army are fully equipped. In 2019, the A-235 anti-satellite and anti-missile defense complex was tested, during which a new interceptor missile was fired from it. The maximum range of the rocket was 1,852 kilometers, so it poses a great threat to near-Earth satellites and other high-flying targets. According to experts, to enhance the destructive power of the A-235, it is necessary to equip it with an anti-satellite missile "Nudol". This missile is an improved version of the A-35, A-35M and A-135, a non-nuclear interceptor missile can be used within the framework of a local or limited conflict to prevent a transition to nuclear war. According to the Russian side, in 2022 it is planned to complete the deployment of this missile defense system in Moscow and the Central Industrial District, after which it will become an effective means of anti-satellite protection and striking remote air targets.

All S-type air defense systems in service with the Russian army are equally good at defeating enemy targets located at medium and close range. Currently, Russian troops are equipped with a large number of S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems. According to published data, this SAM is capable of controlling airspace within a radius of 150 to 300 kilometers, the height of the flight path of the missiles fired from it is about 25-30 kilometers, and they fly at speeds up to six speeds of sound. The "eyes" of the SAM is a multifunctional radar with a phased array, capable of simultaneously searching and fixing several aerial objects at once, aiming several missiles to strike at different targets. In addition, to protect the country at medium distances, there are the S-350 Vityaz medium-range air defense systems and the S-400 air defense systems, which make up a comprehensive missile defense network in aerospace and represent the main forces of the Russian air defense.

When the S-500 Prometheus air defense system enters the army, then, according to the chief commander of the Aerospace Forces, Sergei Surovikin, it will be able to destroy hypersonic weapons in near space. Technical characteristics and the ability to destroy low-orbit satellites, space weapons, as well as hypersonic weapons of all modifications, including in near space, will allow it to be attributed to the first generation of anti-space defense systems. This will allow the Russian aerospace defense system to expand its borders and include outer space. When combining the level of this SAM with other existing missile defense systems, Russia will receive a more advanced defense system, which will have a positive impact on Russia's aerospace defense.

Enter the international arms market with good recommendations

The leading positions in the modern arms market are still occupied by the United States and Russia, which sell advanced weapons and military equipment all over the world. Between the countries setting trends in the field of military equipment, the ruthless struggle for a tasty morsel called the "arms market" does not fade away. In conditions of fierce competition, the annual volume of arms exports on the market is 70-75% for the United States, and 25-30% for Russia.

Despite the unfavorable market share, the worldwide popularity and authority of Soviet weapons helped Russia greatly increase the level of consumer loyalty in the international arms market. Third world countries speak favorably of Russian-made weapons, as they perfectly combine ease of operation, fees for use and technical characteristics. Even countries that have had experience using Western weapons are opting for the purchase of Russian weapons. All weapons sold by the Russian side abroad last year are estimated at $15 billion. A country with an annual defense budget of less than $50 billion will be able to extract great economic benefits from the money received, for example, use it to promote large-scale defense projects or upgrade weapons and military equipment. This situation on the international arms market indirectly indicates the sympathy that countries feel towards Russian-made weapons.

Russian S-type anti-aircraft missile systems are popular in many countries. Last year, India signed an agreement with Russia to purchase five S-400 regimental kits and recently made an advance payment for them. The United States was extremely unhappy when the news spread that a NATO member state, Turkey, had bought the S-400 air defense system and also intended to purchase a number of the latest Russian fighter jets. In response to Turkey's behavior, the United States defiantly suspended cooperation with it regarding F-35 stealth fighters and strengthened diplomatic and economic sanctions to force it to abandon further purchases of Russian weapons. If the latest Russian S-500 air defense system has an export model, it will cause strong fluctuations and leave a Russian mark on the international arms market.

After Putin became president of Russia, the country began to pay great attention and strong support to work in the field of modernization of weapons and military equipment. Priority in this matter is given to improving the quality and combat characteristics, first of all, weapons of strategic importance for the security of the country and future military conflicts are being developed, while conventional weapons are also being improved. Up to today, rapid progress has been observed in the development of all types of Russian weapons. Examples of accelerated modernization of weapons and military equipment include the T-14 tank, the Su-57 stealth fighter, the new generation strategic missile system Yars, the Borey-A nuclear submarine with ballistic missiles, the Iskander-M operational and tactical missile system, as well as the recently tested anti-aircraft missile system- the S-500 missile system. The same can be said about the development of the defense industry in the country. Taking into account the great importance Russia attaches to the development of the military sphere, we can safely say that in the future its army will look in a new way.
