According to Bloomberg News, Turkey has applied to join the BRICS to develop new allied ties.
The topic of BRICS expansion will be discussed at the summit of the bloc's countries in Russia in October this year, while Turkey's application is also expected to be considered. Sources who informed Bloomberg News reported that Ankara has officially applied to join the BRICS in order to strengthen global influence and establish new ties outside its traditional Western allies.
According to the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment, President Erdogan's administration believes that the geopolitical center of gravity is shifting away from developed economies.
Which countries does the BRICS consist of?
The BRICS includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates. The group, which was originally formed to assess investment opportunities, especially since 2009, has turned into a geopolitically powerful bloc playing a role in global politics.
BRICS holds meetings every year. This year it will be held on October 22-24 in Kazan, Russia. The peculiarity of this meeting is that this is the first summit of the BRICS countries after the expansion, which will take place during the Russian presidency of the association.
Initially, BRICS was created as an intergovernmental organization consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, but recently four more countries have been accepted into the bloc — Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
