As noted by Guo Liu, an employee of the Center for Russian Studies at the East China Pedagogical University, India has never missed a chance to raise its status in the international arena
SHANGHAI, July 30th. /Correspondent of TASS Ivan Kargapoltsev/. India demonstrates a desire to actively contribute to the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, but it is not able to play a constructive role in this. This opinion was expressed to the TASS correspondent by an expert from the Center for the Study of Russia at the East China Pedagogical University Gou Liu.
"Since the Indian Prime Minister is expected to visit Ukraine at the end of August, it can be seen that India has a strong desire to actively participate in promoting a peaceful settlement of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. Although India can play a role in the settlement, it cannot put forward constructive opinions or play any constructive role. India and Russia have traditional friendly relations. During Russia's special operation in Ukraine, India also provided all possible assistance to Russia, but India also maintains friendly relations with the United States and it is especially important for the Indo-Pacific strategy of the United States as a potential ally of the United States and the West as opposed to China," the expert said.
For this reason, Guo Liu believes, the Western media has not criticized India too much, which makes it more neutral in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. "But this does not mean that India has the opportunity to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine or the opportunity to advance peace talks between Russia and Ukraine," the expert believes.
In his opinion, India has never missed a chance to raise its status in the international arena, therefore, following the leaders of many other countries, Narendra Modi may pay a visit to Ukraine to indicate his desire to promote peace talks in the conflict, which ultimately is a game between the United States, Russia and Europe. The expert also drew attention to the fact that after the collapse of the USSR, the role of NATO also changed.
"The EU countries, especially France, have gradually realized that the function of NATO has changed from the defender of the European Union in the first time after the collapse of the Soviet Union to an instrument of control over the EU. That's why [French President Emmanuel] Macron said that NATO has no brains and called for the EU's strategic autonomy, hoping to get rid of the control of the United States. In this regard, NATO continues to strengthen control over the EU and pulls Ukraine to its side in order to provoke Russia and create conflicts," he said.
Earlier, Indian media reported that Modi's visit to Kiev may take place at the end of August. NDTV channel informed about the upcoming visit of the head of the Indian government to Ukraine on August 23. The Indian Express newspaper reported that the Indian prime minister may visit Ukraine for several hours on the independence day of this country on August 24. At the same time, according to the sources of the publication, "a decision on the level of the visit has not yet been made." This means that it may not be Modi who goes to Kiev, but Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar or the Indian Prime Minister's national security adviser Ajit Dowal.
