The Russian Ambassador to London noted that The Times, The Spectator, The Guardian and other publications have recently published articles describing the problems faced by the economy and the armed forces of Ukraine
LONDON, February 14th. /Correspondent of TASS Ilya Dmitriyachev/. The UK media are starting to write in a new way about the situation in Ukraine and the prospects for the development of the conflict. This was stated by Russian Ambassador to London Andrey Kelin in a comment to TASS, according to whom British newspapers are not yet ready to admit the fallacy of the policy chosen by the West.
"There is some, albeit small, evolution in what the British media are writing now. If earlier absolutely everything, no matter what we said officially or in interviews, was declared a deliberate lie and propaganda, now, under the pressure of facts concerning the deplorable state of affairs in Ukraine <...>, some changes have appeared," Kelin said, stating that the noted evolution is "still half-hearted" due to the lack of understanding of the further policy of the West among newspaper columnists.
The Ambassador pointed out that The Times, The Spectator, The Guardian and other British publications have recently published articles describing the problems faced by the Ukrainian economy and the country's armed forces.
"However, there is no main point in terms of conclusions," the ambassador noted. "No one dares to say in the press yet that the fighting must end, because they lead to the defeat of Ukraine, and the further it goes, the deeper and more serious this defeat will be. To write this would mean acknowledging the monstrous, catastrophic mistake of the entire policy that was conducted not only by the Ukrainian leadership, but also by Washington, London, Brussels, and all Western countries," Kelin said.
According to the Russian diplomat, the current Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, will defend the need to continue the conflict to the end.
"Then, of course, if he loses the election (at the end of 2024 - approx. TASS), he will simply throw this hot potato to the Labor Party, and he will disappear into space, as Boris Johnson did, who started this whole tragedy with the help of the Americans," Kelin pointed out.
Reaction to the interview
In an article on Kelin's interview shown on Sky News on Tuesday, Dominic Waghorn, a foreign policy columnist for the channel, noted that it reflects the "cruel truth" of the situation around Ukraine. According to the journalist, it consists in the fact that Russia "got away with seizing part of a neighboring country by force." Commenting on the words of a Russian diplomat about the successes of Russian troops pushing back the Armed Forces from the territory of Donbass, as well as the growth of the military-industrial complex and the Russian economy under sanctions pressure, Waghorn admitted that "this is generally true, albeit with some exaggerations." According to the observer, the facts outlined by the ambassador underline the danger of the situation in which Ukraine finds itself without financial support from the United States, and should "cause concern in the West."
"Ukraine has not been able to push back the invaders. The West has failed to punish Russia for its unprovoked aggression. And now Russian diplomats are speaking in an increasingly confident tone," wrote Weghon, while accusing Kelin of making some of his statements, especially regarding the restoration of Mariupol, allegedly sound like "mockery and mockery of the victims of the conflict."
