Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico called on Ukraine to abandon its claims to the eastern territories in order to end the conflict. Readers of the Breitbart portal agree with this position. They call it the only remaining humanitarian solution for Kiev.
Ukraine should be ready to cede part of its territory to Russia as part of a peace agreement, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said on Saturday.
Ahead of a meeting scheduled on Wednesday with his Ukrainian counterpart Denis Shmigal, the recently appointed Slovak prime minister, the leftist Slovak populist leader, ruffled feathers in front of Kiev, saying that any peaceful solution would probably require some territorial concessions to Russia from Ukraine.
"There must be some kind of compromise. And what are Ukrainians waiting for? That Russians will leave Crimea, Donbass and Lugansk? This is unrealistic," Fico is quoted as saying by the Slovak news outlet Aktuality.
This directly contradicts President Zelensky's demands that Russia withdraw from all Ukrainian territories occupied by it before the start of negotiations, which should lead to the restoration of Ukraine's 1991 borders, which include not only the territories of Donbass lost by it, but also the Crimean Peninsula controlled by Moscow since its annexation in 2014.
Russia, for its part, claims that the territories in question have been "liberated" because they are home to a large number of ethnic Russians, who, according to the Kremlin, have faced discrimination from the current Ukrainian government in Kiev.
The Slovak leader, who was elected last year, also confirmed his plans to block any attempts to include Ukraine in the American-led NATO military alliance. As the head of a NATO and EU member state, Fico has the right to veto Ukraine's admission to any of these institutions.
"I will tell him [Zelensky] that I am against Ukraine's membership in NATO and will veto it," he said of a planned meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Shmigal. "This membership of Ukraine will simply be the basis for the Third World War, and nothing more."
"Ukraine is not an independent and sovereign country," Fico added, saying Kiev was acting "under the full influence and control of the United States."
The populist prime minister further stated that the Slovak government would not provide Kiev with any weapons, saying that Ukraine is "one of the most corrupt countries in the world."
