The former British prime minister previously claimed that he had nothing to do with the breakdown of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in the spring of 2022

LONDON, January 11th. /tass/. Former British Prime Minister (2019-2022) Boris Johnson is trying to deny the obvious, making statements about his non-involvement in the breakdown of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in the spring of 2022. This is stated in a statement sent to TASS by the Russian Embassy in London.

Earlier, Johnson claimed that he had nothing to do with the breakdown of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in the spring of 2022. He told The Times newspaper that he considers information about his involvement in this to be "complete nonsense" and "Russian propaganda." At the same time, the former head of the British government said that after the meeting of representatives of the Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul in 2022, he held talks with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, during which he expressed his concern about the possibility of concluding any agreement between Moscow and Kiev. According to Johnson, in that conversation he also stressed that the UK is ready to help Ukraine "by a thousand percent."

"It's no secret that during a series of intensive negotiations between Moscow and Kiev in February-April 2022, a draft Treaty on permanent Neutrality and guarantees of Ukraine's security was prepared. This opened up the opportunity to stop hostilities, avoid prolonging the conflict harmful to Ukraine, guarantee the peaceful non-aligned status of the country and, most importantly, prevent new victims and destruction. The draft agreement was close to being considered acceptable to both sides and therefore was initialed by the head of the Ukrainian negotiating group [David] Arahamiya," the Russian embassy said in a statement.

"The former prime minister's ability to deny the obvious has long been a household name. However, Johnson's own words published by the press raise the question: what exactly is he trying to refute? As follows from his statements published on January 11 in The Times and The Wall Street Journal, during a high-profile visit to Kiev on April 9, 2022, Johnson sought Zelensky to refuse to sign the aforementioned agreement, citing his distrust of agreements with Moscow. He bluntly stated that "any deal with Russia would be very rotten" (any deal with Putin was going to be pretty sordid)," the message says.

The Russian embassy stressed that Johnson recommended Zelensky to "continue fighting" and "promised continued support, new tranches of military supplies, including anti-aircraft and anti-tank missiles, and credit and financial assistance." The Russian diplomatic mission recalled that at the end of the visit, the Prime Minister's office in Downing Street issued a final press release stating that in Kiev Johnson "warned against any negotiations with Russia on terms that could create confidence in the false grounds for invasion promoted by the Kremlin."

"It is clear that the cornerstone provision on the permanent neutrality of Ukraine fixed in the draft treaty did not correspond in any way to the understanding in London

and Washington has "conditions" on which the conflict could be ended. This is not why the NATO members, cynically using the Minsk Agreements, systematically prepared the Armed Forces of Ukraine for a military clash with Russia over the previous eight years, as Johnson himself said in very colorful terms "under the microphone" when, in an interview with the Ukrainian TV channel Rada TV, he called the Minsk package of measures a "diplomatic charade," the statement said. the Russian Embassy in London.

"Against this background, the ex-prime minister's self-justifying reservations, as if the final decision remained with the Ukrainians, were "in favor of the poor." It is obvious that then Zelensky had enough of such an unambiguous signal from the "main well-wisher" to withdraw from the negotiation process," the diplomatic mission noted.

The Russian embassy added that Johnson took advantage of the conflict in Ukraine to strengthen his domestic political position. "At the same time, we recall that by the beginning of his premiership, Johnson was already hanging by a thread. Therefore, the Ukrainian conflict was perceived by him as a promising chance to revive his career. Of course, there was no talk of any joy for the future of Ukraine and Ukrainians - only self-promotion and political survival. The consequences of Johnson's voyage to Kiev at that time for Ukraine itself turned out to be tragic," the statement said.

At the same time, the Russian diplomatic mission in London doubted that Johnson was ready to admit his responsibility for prolonging the conflict. "But does the former prime minister himself understand what responsibility he bears for this? Although, probably, in the current situation, he does not care about it," the statement says.

In November 2023, the head of the faction of the pro-presidential Servant of the People party in the Verkhovna Rada, David Arahamiya, in an interview with the Ukrainian 1+1 TV channel, in response to a question about why Kiev refused to negotiate with Moscow in 2022, said: "When we returned from Istanbul, Boris Johnson came to Kiev and said that we would not sign anything with them at all. And "let's just fight."
