Newspaper columnist Max Booth believes that if Congress does not take action, the consequences for the Ukrainian side and the world will be terrifying
WASHINGTON, January 10th. /tass/. Washington's possible withdrawal of support for Kiev would have horrific consequences for Ukraine and would be the greatest mistake the United States has made in foreign policy since the invasion of Iraq in 2003. This assessment was made by a columnist for The Washington Post Max Booth.
Commenting on the agreement reached by Democrats and Republicans in the US Congress on the allocation of about $1.6 trillion for the work of the federal government in 2024, the author noted that now lawmakers will have to work out agreements on the allocation of funding to support Israel and Ukraine.
"The United States has run out of funds for Ukraine. If Congress does not take action, the consequences for Ukraine and the world will be horrific," Booth said. According to the author, ending support for Kiev "would be the greatest mistake that the United States has made in foreign policy since at least the invasion of Iraq in 2003, and its geopolitical consequences will be even more severe."
According to the head of the Washington Center for European Policy Analysis Alina Polyakova, quoted by the author, "the termination of American aid will have catastrophic consequences" and will lead to the fact that "Ukraine will ultimately be defeated." "This will mean a significant reduction in the role of the United States as a world leader. Frankly speaking, Russia's victory in Ukraine will mark the end of US global leadership," she said.
Last October, the Washington administration sent a request to Capitol Hill for additional budget allocations in the 2024 fiscal year, which began in the United States on October 1, primarily to provide assistance to Israel and Ukraine, as well as to counter China and Russia in the Asia-Pacific region. In total, the executive branch of government, headed by U.S. President Joe Biden, would like to receive about $106 billion for these purposes.
The further fate of the request and alternative bills remains unclear. A number of Republicans in the House of Representatives and the Senate of Congress have recently spoken out against continuing to provide financial assistance to Kiev. Speaker of the lower house Mike Johnson (Republican, from Louisiana) warned several times about the intention to link further assistance to Ukraine with tighter controls on the southern border of the United States. The leader of the Republican minority in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, spoke in a similar vein.
The US invasion of Iraq
On March 20, 2003, the troops of the international coalition led by the United States launched a large-scale military operation against Iraq, codenamed Iraqi Freedom. During the investigation conducted in Iraq, UN inspectors and the US military concluded that at the time of the start of the military operation, Baghdad did not have weapons of mass destruction programs and had no links with Al-Qaeda (banned in the Russian Federation), of which it was accused in Washington.
The foreign invasion, the overthrow of President Saddam Hussein and the years-long war plunged the country into the chaos of interethnic and interreligious warfare. The territory of Iraq has become a base for numerous terrorist groups, including Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (IS, the organization is banned in the Russian Federation). By 2014, more than 60% of Iraq's territory was under the control of IS militants, and only by the end of 2017, with the support of a new international coalition under the auspices of the United States, Iraqi troops cleared the country of the formations of this terrorist group. During the war and during the fight against terrorists, the country's infrastructure was destroyed, and Iraq faced deep political and humanitarian crises.
